This was brought up in another thread, thought it was very interesting. Figured it deserved its own thread.

WHAT’S THE AVERAGE AGE OF CARS ON THE ROAD?

We get asked from time to time how old are cars and what’s the average age of cars on the road. We’ve been analyzing automotive data for two decades! Scroll down to see some vehicle age analysis you won’t find anywhere else.

The average age of a vehicle in the US will hit 12.9 years in 2025, according to a projection by Hedges & Company. By contrast, the average age of a vehicle in Europe in 2022 was 11.8 years according to the ACEA.

What’s the average age of a car?
It’s well-documented, the average age of cars on the road is going up each year. We show a table here, using data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) for average age of all vehicles by year,

Our stable is older than the average.
Prior to yesterday (when I bought a newer vehicle), our average for 6 vehicles is 16.6 years
With yesterdays purchase, our average for 7 vehicles is now 14.8 years.
All are registered and in great running condition.

I have 7 running vehicles. ( !! ) Five that I use regularly though one of those is going to be another 'back-up' soon. Average age 26. Taking out the oldest that I seldom drive but do register: 19.6. One is a '00 plow truck. Taking that one out: 18.5.

I've kind of been stocking up ! I intensely dislike touch screens and they don't seem to like me. I Really don't want the heater buttons in a screen somewhere. I want knobs or sliders. I don't trust computers. Of the 4 Apple laptops I've had, 2 had a failed harddrive and one a failed screen. Why would I want anything like that in a car ?

I can't afford a vehicle until it's 8 or 10 years old. My most recent purchase including shipping from San Diego was $17,000 for a 2011 Lexus RX350 ( no nav ) which is about the same I would have paid for a pre-rusted '12 RAV4 from around here.

6 running vehicles in our household. 5 insured and on the road.
Oldest to newest: 99, 03, 06, 14, 17,18. The 06 is a plow truck.
according to my calculations BC has you beat, but you were close.
I came up with an average of 14.5 for you. BC is 14.8

Edit to add: Pixie posted while I was figuring your average. She has us all beat. :D

I could have written the same post. 100% agree, I hate touch screens. Biggest reason,,, one has to take their eyes off the road to find and actuate the touch screen to get the function. In my old beaters, I can "feel" the button I need.

1995 Dodge truck
1997 Dodge truck
2002 Dodge truck
2002 Jeep Cherokee
2005 Crossfire
2006 Crossfire
2021 Pacifica
Average age 20 years

All are licensed to drive.
I did not include the 2000 tricked out van which is currently running but not licensed and is in storage.
It would put my average at 20.75

@pixie We love our 2010 Lexus RX350... except that it gets about the same gas mileage as my Silverado. :)
@waybomb Keep thinking of it when I'm away from my computer but can you use a MB hood ornament? It's one of the old stud type that you can pull off the hood. It came off our old 190E. Circa late 1980's.

@bczoom ya, I'm not expecting great mileage with the Lexus but better than my Tundra. Probably the last car I'll own. I wanted something nice after driving old rattle-traps and rough riding pick ups all my life. I've been saving gas for 15 years with RAV4s and now I can afford to burn some :)

There's a bunch of car nuts on this forum !!! Now I don't feel so bad about my collection lol
