I drive pickups so do not have a trunk. A couple of things I never leave home without is a loaded 357 magnum and a box of shells.

I've had VW's, Audi's and MB. it's a bit of a giggle because German laws require all autos have a First Aid kit, and in
Germany the reflecting triangle doohickie. the fav for German DUI checks is seeing if you can untangle and setup your triangle . . .
otoh, they don't do flares.
now . . . checking the "First Aid" kits for automobiles..... one finds lots of band aides, gloves - usually, 'sting pads' - in case you crash into a beehive(?), sometimes a smash&ice pad.
but . . . anyone else thinking about crash emergencies? . . .
why do you need cotton swabs?
what are you going to do with the "alcohol prep pad"? give someone an injection of pain killer you don't have?
why does zero.none of the first aid kits include a tourniquet? no one ever has a serious bleed on an extremity in a auto crash?

stuff like:
jumper cables
tow strap
tire sealant
12v air compressor
. . . . are not 'first aid' items. those are 'be ye prepped?' items.

once upon a last lifetime , , , we were headed up to Killington - DW+3 kids....., got kinda' lost, went to turn around, Ford E150 window van got steered off the snow covered road (yeah, I was the driver...) into a ditch, and was like totally stuck - not a single possible thought to 'self extraction' - a winch would have been useful, but I had only a wench.... she's a very good wench, and I still have that wench....

a Good Samaritan happened by, hooked up the 30' tow strap 'I just happened to have' - had us out in a jiffy.
there's a difference in 'being prepared' and a "medical first aid kit"
now-a-days+many last days. . . both cars have jumper cables and tow straps - and a handful of spare fuses.... + a real "medical first aid kit"

DW was enamored by some BMW stuff - well, all BMW come with NO spare, only run-flat tires.
which is superficially 'ok' except being a mean old ornery cuss, I tend to do I-95 traffic during single digit hours.
finding a service facility that 'just happens to have a run flat of the right size' on the shelf . . . = zero.negative.zero at those times.

Here's a kinda scarey trunk.
A friend of mine ...

Lime, a shovel, duct tape and a tarp.
I said, "Dude, this looks like a ..." before I could finish he said, "A friend will help you move. A brother will help you move a body."

I'm not turning my back on him any more

.

Not much.
A few tools, a temporary spare, jack, snow brush, blanket, shovel, and possibly an extinguisher, i can't remember if I took it out or not.
Rarely use the trunk.
