What to be?

Lithium

New member
So I have been dealing with a stuggle with myself for awhile now. I just started college two weeks ago for a Bachlors in Human Services but now I am not sure that is what I want to do...

To be honest I have no idea what I want to do with my life....

I hate it because I want to do school now and not wait but I have no idea what I want to go to school for...

I admit I tend to make decisions based on quick results and how it will help me financially.

I have always struggled financially all my life and I don't want to for the rest of my life. I tend to look at jobs as how much money I can make instead of what I would love or enjoy doing...

Ugh.. Im fustrated and need some advice from someone!

lith, I would suggest taking a comprehensive aptitude test. then, based on what you would be good at, and what you would enjoy doing, train for that. Just a job for a paycheck is a really lousy way to spend a life.

Also, if you're going for a Bachelors the first two years are nothing more than course work to make you, as they put it, a "well rounded individual". You don't even touch classes for your Major until the 3rd year, your Junior year. So just start by taking Math, English, and maybe some Psyche classes until it "hits you" what you want to be. Your first two years don't matter, but they are (or can be) pre-requisites for a lot of other course work. But again, that gives you your Freshman and Sophomore years to figure it out. Just jump in and take some classes, it'll come to you.

I can give some advice Lith. Around 1990 my brother who was in the Riggers Union in Chicago called me up and told me I could make a thousand a week. Well.... I was making 400 a week - so I quit my job here in Wisconsin and moved down there. I HATED it. It was so who you knew and not what u could do. I mostly just showed up - and collected a paycheck and was bored to death. After three months, I layed awake one night asking myself what was wrong with me? I'm making more money than I ever could dream of.. my brother got me into a job that anyone would die for. Well when morning came, I packed up and moved back home. So.. making big bucks doesn't = happiness. I'm making less than that - but am happy with my job. Hope this helps.

I've heard it said "pick a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life"! Very good!

I took the test....

Talitha, you are a PharmacistDuring this test you were asked questions that tested you on 7 abilities which constitute a person's aptitude - Verbal, Numerical, Perceptual, Spatial, Technical, Acuity and Analytical. It was based on how you scored in each of these abilities that we concluded that your aptitude profile ideally matches that of a Pharmacist. This means that you have the gift to 'see' abstract information and make sense of it. This is accompanied with an 'eye' for detail. This detailed test has also revealed to us how you fared in the other abilities, especially the ones you did not do too well in.

Sounds like you could also be an Engineer or CS (software programmer).

The big question is, WHAT interests you? Do you like taking things apart, do you like builiding things, do you like working alone or with people, etc. What are your likes and desires?

Sounds like me right outta high school. I didn't have a clue what I wanted to be. It was May just before graduation. I opened the paper one day and saw that the local college was holding a 2 yr program in the social services field working with people with developmental disabilities. Mom worked in that field for a bit back in the 80's. I like to help people so I signed up for the course. The next week, a casual position came up in that field. I applied for and got the job. I worked weekends while going to school during the week. After I graduated, I was still only part time for a while waiting for a full time posting to come up. My weeks were free so I decided to start supply teaching at the high school since I did two placements there for college. It was good and gave me experience.

I finally got a full time posting working with the mentally and physically challenged(guess that's probably why I can handle Rusty and Muleman) I worked in that field for 7 yrs till I finally got fed up of the political end of things where I worked. I ended up at a plywood mill for 8 yrs till it closed. I was sitting at home laid off for 4 months trying to find work when a job came up working with foster children after they have been placed into care. I applied for the job since my college papers qualified for it. I got the job. Now, I love what I do. I get paid good but it's not the point. I know what the others are saying. When you have found that job you truly love, you don't feel like you are working just to earn a paycheck.

So get out there and figure out what it is you want to do and what makes you happy and go do it. Don't do it just because it's a job and it pays.

Well in my humble opinion, I tried college for a bit and then took a "CLEP" test while still in the Coast Guard and that gave me a two year degree.

But for me, college was something you needed to work for someone else. I have worked for myself better than half my life and have made better than average money working for myself. You may look into a trade school to get trained into something you like doing and start your own business... Besides, you can hire someone with a college degree for $12.00 an hour to work for you!

Anyway, there is lots of options you can chose to go in!

Good luck in your choice!

Horses..I love horses... thinking about that..hmm..

My philosophy has been:
What are your top 3 things you're good at and like?
Take your best of the 3 and save that as a personal hobby.
Make a career out of one (or both) of the other 2.

When I wrote aptitude test, I actually meant something along the lines of the ASVAB or Mensa tests. Those pieces of junk they use at colleges are a joke.

Anything in healthcare. An honorable, recession-proof livelihood, with limitless earning potential.

BTW: for a better understanding of your personal/professional fit, find it on the web and take the DiSC profile. Might cost you $30, but most of the responsible HR groups will use it as a hiring tool.

Well, you're not supposed to taste it. yuk.

Sorry healthcare ain't your bag. I was going to suggest high finance as a second choice. If you've got the balls.
