What the ??? AFCI, GFCI

johnday

The Crazy Scot, #3
As some know, I'm upnorth away from 'puters most of the time, until I come back to Monroe. I've got to finish this place by Aug/Sept. Just don't have time to post as usual right now

Any way, I do know the difference betwixt a GFI and an AFI. The question is, can both still be used on the same circuit? In other words, an AFI in the service panal, and a GFI receptacle further down the circuit? This is a bedroom circuit, #12, 20 Amp, with one lonely little outside receptacle as the 2nd outlet in the circuit. It may sound as overkill to many, to have a 20 amp circuit in a bedroom, but I wire all my duplex's for 20 amp, then my lighting circuits for #14, 15 amp.

I know Jerry will pipe up, but thought it good info for anyone.:tiphat::beer::beer:

John,
As far as I know, they will work together. I have not heard of any cases where they would not.
It looks like, according to the proposals, in the 2008 NEC ALL 120V 15-20 amp circuits will need to be AFCI protected.

Have the manufacturers solved the receptacle arcing concerns? I remember that the breakers would trip if you plugged or unplugged a device that had an active draw (think fan or vacuum cleaner).

That appears to no longer be a problem unless you're really, really slow at plugging things in
However I try to keep things turned off until plugged in. I've seen accidents happen that way.....:thumb:

BTW John,
I'm heading to Durand next week. You anywhere close?

Jerry, I'm not sure where Durand is. In fact, I never heard of it. I'm in Monroe which is just north of Toledo, Exit 11 on I-75.:tiphat::beer::beer:

John,
It's just SW of Flint, not quite halfway between Flint and Lansing. We're going up on Wednesday for 2 days there and then heading to Sarnia for a few days. Back to Durand Monday morning and then return home.
