What kind of oil for Tucker transfer cases

I'm getting ready to change the oil in my '63 443A's transfer case and looking for some advice. I have a Tucker - Chevron lube spec sheet from 1979 that recommends Chevron Delo 200 10W motor oil. I went down to the local Napa store and the guys there pointed me towards "R&O Hydraulic Oil", they said their spec sheet showed it equates to 10W.

Does this sound OK to the Tucker folks out there? Thanks for any help!

it should be fine but it's not exactly the same for your use you don't need the anti foaming agents or the detergants that are in it most gear oils have a high sulfur content for tht reason i would go to an oil supplyer and see what they have alot of your older stuff will call for 10 wt instead of hydraulic oil hope this helps and not confuses my thaughts would be to look for a gear oil with the same viscosity as the 10 wt with a high sulfer content the number like 10 wt is not a universal number i have some synthetic 50 gear oil for eaton transmissions and it still pours like 80w90 like i said talk with a profesional oil represenitive about your needs he will know more than the zit faced kid at napa.

Thanks for the advice Don - I've also been directed to an AW32 oil at another supplier. I did some research on "R&O" - it means rust and anti-oxidation additive, otherwise I believe it's pretty standard 10W oil.

Oh boy it's Friday night and I'm chatin' about oil - I need a life................!

That dog just hates it in there doesn't he? LOL!!

I'm pretty sure my 82 tucker 1342 says regular old 80-90 weight?

Tuckers current recommendation is Synthetic Amsoil 75W-90 It is very light viscosity for winter use but protects like all the new synthetics. Lucas fifth-wheel slider lube is the recommendation for your turn tables (instead of grease.

tere we go that's what i would use an oil for gears that run at high speed by the way the synthetic gear oils are also a high sulfer oil too

Thanks for the input guys. I do use the Lucas on the sliders on both my cats currently - great stuff, very sticky at that. I was just concerned with the age of the '63 and weather I should be careful to keep close what was originally run in the transfer case. I like the Amsoil recommendation - I'm not sure if the transfer case on the '63 is a chain vs. gear drive inside and that might influence my oil choice closer once I figure that out.

Well off to work - we are getting pounded with snow if the Vail to Leadville CO area! 160" mid mtn season total accumulation withe a settled base of 43" at Vail as of this morning. I'll try to post some pics soon

I'm running Valvoline full synthetic 75W-90 in my transfer case and both diff's. The transfer cases in my '53 and '58 have three gears, no chain. I suspect your's is the same(?).

Thanks Mtn-Track - That's what I was looking for, someone with a Tucker of the same vintage's advice. I'm going with the synthetic.

By the way - have you had your '53 up into the snow yet? Man she sure turned out nice.

I haven't had it out in the snow yet but that will change here shortly. I'm finishing up a tool and spares kit and going over everything again before I take it out for its snow trials. Every year our local S.O.E.S. division does its annual SAR/snow/Avy training in January and I've been invited to challenge their new Prinoth Trooper up on Cameron Pass. Their new machine is due to be delivered during the first week in January so I need to have the 443 proven before then. If they don't get their Trooper then I'll just have to run circles around their old Spryte (the one that replaced my Tucker!).:whistling:

Now, quit messing with your oil issue and give us more pic's of your beautiful Tucker in all that snow you have up there!:brows:

I had a conversation about six months ago with Jeff (parts and service manager at Tucker) about this subject.

Basically his answer was "It depends..."

If your machine is used hard (think: as a groomer) he recommends Amsoil's heavy duty version of their synthetic 75W-90. (Amsoil makes different 75W-90 gear lubes).

However he recommended ATF if used in a light duty role. IIRC he recommended Dexron VI, though others should be fine.
