Yesterday afternoon we got a call for an unconscious 74 year old female. Arrive on scene to find the woman lying naked in the bathroom in a puddle of her urine. Upon exam, she regains consciousness, is confused with a low blood pressure, pain to her right hip, and headache. Blood sugar was within normal limits. The woman lives alone and was supposed to meet her family in Seattle for Thanksgiving earlier in the day. Her sister had called the house and no one answered the phone. The sister found the woman on the floor after entering the house and called 9-1-1. It turns out that she had been lying there for more than 48 hours. We found 2 empty bottles of wine in her living room and the sister said that she had a history of binging on liquor.
We backboarded the woman (as a precaution) and transported her to the hospital. I am convinced that if her sister did not go into her house, she would have died within a couple of days. She is lucky to be alive but that is no way to spend Thankgiving.
