Whale

It's just another one of those natural resource issues where there are too many people in the world to satisfy the demand for a naturally created resource. We people will ultimately consume the earth unless Mother Nature finds a way to cull us out first.

I don't really have a problem with whaling but I think the supply is pretty limited and the demand is too big. Ultimately, we will just kill them all off unless we can keep the limits in place.

One of my co-workers used to be a tuna fisherman - he said that about a decade ago the catches started going way down. It wasn't only overfishing of the tuna themselves but overfishing of the feeder fish the tuna feed on and things such as bottom dragging fishing that pretty much takes everything and screws up the bottom where all the fish eggs and plants that feeder fish eat grow and stuff like that. I have read similar things about other fish types - that the catches are going way down. He compared it to hunting for deer - when responsible hunters take a deer they don't do things like kill a mother with a fawn, they take older deer and males. This controls the population somewhat without totally destroying the herds. He said the fishing is different - since the fish are basically unseen when you take them you never really have a clear idea of how the population is doing - and both males and females are taken - which doesn't help to bring the populations back. Whales are probably a little easier to track than most fish - and I am not really sure what the justification is for taking a whale in this day and age (we don't need whale oil any more- for instance). My coworker agreed with a lot of the conservation groups that try to severely restrict fisheries - especially the so called "factory fishing" types of operations.

My opinion is that whaling should be allowed - within reason and should be closely monitored, but only if there is some product we are getting from whales that can't easily be replicated thru other means. If we are taking whales to make dog food or something like that then I think there ought to be an outright ban on whaling until at some point in the future the populations recover.
