WEll .... its broke good ...

Gone But Not Forgotten
Backing up tonight on the tractor , something let go in the transmission and it is now DOA . I'll start removing the backhoe and loader in the morning to bring it into the shop to tear down and split apart . I believe I may have sheared a pin in the tranny and two gears are jammed . Always wondered what the inside of a Kioti looked liked ?????? Tomorrow I get my chance .

Bummer.

We just got a Kioti dealer here in town. Its a heavy equipment dealer that rents large construction equipment. Have not ventured in to look at the Kiotis on their lot. They have one that is one model smaller than mine. I think they have a DK35 . . . Isn't that what you have? Maybe you could talk someone into making a midnight parts run :whistling:

I have the DK45 and love the tractor . My shop is better equipped than the kioti dealer so I think i'll just fix it here .

Bummer Al , just curious as to what made you determine its in the trans or what was it doing ? I do have a reason for asking.

Also it would be great if you would take step by step pics and document the teardown and repair as you go along . Theres very few threads to be found on these types of repairs on the internet or at least that I have found . It sure would be helpfull to anyone else that do their own repairs .

Well I torn into the tractor and the transmission is scattered . Gear Pieces in the bottom of the trans housing .I still do not know why it let go . Tomorrow I'll split the tractor in half and remove the transmission for rebuild . I am waiting on a parts book so I know what to order back in . Looks like this would have been a 5 grand Plus job if it had gone to the dealer . So far I am into it about 4 1/2 hours labor . It was not bad removing the fenders and seat platform . Once I get the transmission rebuilt ,I think I can have it up and running in 8 hours . I am going to also change all fiulds /filters and recheck every piece of her .
Even the dealer told me the service book is of little help so I am glad I am doing this myself .

how long will it take you to get the kristy so you can drive it maybe you can work on the kristy while the trans is off and being rebuilt with a little work you can get the kristy running before it gets krusty

From your earlier posts I wonder if the noise was a bearing going bad which allowed the gears to misalign and break. Clean is the keyword when you put it back together. A good strong magnet for metal chips is also a good idea as a very small piece in a bearing can wipe them out quick.

We have a winner ! Give that man a cigar ! That Bill is exactly what happened . :wow:

The tractor is now split apart in the shop . We found the forward/ reverse gear pack in the transmission had chewed up a needle bearing completely . That in turn allowed the shaft to rotate out of alingment , mashing the gears and wiping out the gear shaft . I was damn lucky !!!!! This is all the damage that was done . I have a parts book coming in the mail and it should be here saturday . I'll get the parts overnite expressed to me and should be back up in a day after recieving them . I learned a lot on this fix . It was much easier than I thought it would be to tear down . Of course having the new shop and all the tools made a huge difference .
I am also installing a new clutch and throw out bearing while I am in it this far . They look fine ,but I would rather be safe now than sorry later . I took some pictures but it just looks like a pile of tractor parts so I do not know how much that would help anybody thats has to do this .

For you photo freaks !!

Good call on the clutch, although it looks like the tractor is well maintained and very clean, most of the old tractors I've worked on where some what welded together and rusted tight. thanks for the pics,it gives a good idea of what is involved in repairing it.

All the parts are being air freighted to me and I should be putting it back together on Wed or Thur . About $500 bucks but that does include a new clutch .

Big Al,

Know what you mean about service mauals and operators manuals, for that matter not being of much use with imported tractors. I have a 270hp Agco/Challenger FWA tractor the manuals have translated from French I believe. Not what I had in mind at all...Almost useless, till desprate, then you still have to call the dealer at times....

It has loads of electronics, miles of wire. Every thing is switched electrically. Hope it lasts...

If you ever tackle a transmission job on a Kioti you had better be damn good . If it was not for my old neighbor , who is a whiz with transmissions , I would have been lost. We spent about 2 1/2 hours getting all the gears , synco's , and bearings correct .

We now have the tractor mated back together and I am installing all the tin work .

Kioti must have known they had a problem as the new needle bearings are much larger than the old ones were . They made the gear shaft a smaller diameter to compensate for the bigger bearing .If you ever need just the needle bearings make sure you get the old style or they will not fit on the original gear shaft .

Well if you did not use it like a Deere it would not have broke!:yum: Sounds like yours is not the first one to have problems if they changed it to a heavier bearing.:hammer:

Bill,
After talking with the service tech out here that works for Kioti , I have found out a lot of stuff about this problem .Kioti has switched to the larger bearings .
Apparently Kioti has teamed up with Bobcat and came out with quite a series of new tractor models .Want to guess where all those old undersized bearings are now being used ? Thats right ....... there now on the Bobcats models .He mentioned they are seeing about a large fail rate and are considering dropping the Bobcat line . I have 700 hours on my Kioti when it failed with no warning, other than a slight squealing sound .

He was telling me every model has been beefed up on the gear shaft bearing in the Kioti line because of this .
He also told me it was a $$5500 - 6000 dollar job in his shop to replace or go to the bigger set of bearings .:sad:

It was a very involved job that I never want to do again .I consider myself lucky as I only have about $750 invested total , but again I do have a complete shop to work in , here on the ranch .

Didn't someone on here recently buy one of the Bobcat tractors? That would be a real bummer to have a new tractor with a known defect!:hammer:

Al are these comments directed to a fellow snot trac owner

Yes it is ! I got side tracked . The Kioti is just about back together . Not a fun shop , but I feel pretty good about the way its going back together .Taking a little break over the forth and will finish in about 2 or 3 more hours .

I thought this was about a broken Kioti TRACTOR
it is just sounded like Al was needeling at a snot trac owner who bought a bobcat tractor instead of the kioti like his. i was going to make some comment about running out of gas too but rememberd i had to walk home to get the snow trac and tow it to the gas station i shuld fix the gauge.

Needleing ???? Would I do somethink like that ???? :yum::yum:

Have a great time in England ,Bob . But remember Dargo put me up to this .:flowers::yum::yum:. I even save the email from Dargo in case you don't believe me.

Still luv me ???:wink::brows::yum:

No need for proof Al. I promise I own up to my pranks! I'm just wondering if we got him to even wonder any. Prolly not. Oh well, there's always time for a good clean prank later...:whistling: With all his new cameras, we couldn't use the usual "having a party at his house" one.

Actually I'm not worried about my Bobcat, despite this thread. Mine is a completely different series. I've yet to read about a similar problem with the Kioti "CK" series tractors. My Bobcat is a near clone of the CK, but your tractor is a "DK" series machine which is a completely different animal.

The DK problems may transfer over to some of the Bobcat models like the Bobcat CT450, but the DK problems will not affect my CT235.

FWIW, the day before we flew to London I was cleaning up some storm damage from my woods. Remember how I commented in my thread reviewing my tractor about the fact that the oil filter hangs dangerously under the machine? Remember how I worried it could get snagged. Well it did get snagged on a tree branch as I will pulling some out of the woods. No damage, I stopped the tractor fast enough and pulled the stray branch free. Still, I do feel it is a bad design and now have proved it beyond reasonable doubt.

actually I had one of the first CK20's that were available here when they came out...at about 400 hours (3 years) it spun the spline shaft in the HST unit - cost me 1200 out-of-pocket to get it repaired (out of warranty). I know of at least 2 others that had the same issue, on or around that time.

Well , It all fixed and running great . I learned a lot and hope I never have to do that again . :w00t2:

I'll start rebuilding my rototiller this week. The drive belts are out of alinement (sp).
