Water bombers

A common site in this area each summer is the constant rumblings of the CL415 water bomber. They are pretty amazing aircraft to watch in action. Our local airport is mostly used by the cl415's and birddog spotter planes during the summer months.

This is a common occurance around here. I've only had it happen once while I was out fishing......

Cool stuff! Thanks!

I always wonder though, it seems like such a small amount of water when it's dropped on those huge fires. I'm sure it helps a bit but it seems like they need a lot more of them.

A few years ago, I had the chance to see inside one at the airport. They had 2 cl415's there along with 3 older cl215's. I was surpsrised how small the water tanks actually were. Not at all what I was expecting but they are very effective.

I think the effectiveness is greatly enhanced by how atomized the water becomes after it is dropped. It really looks like a fog by the time it hits the fire.

Was browsing around and found this pic showing the inside of a cl-415 waterbomber. Those tanks are what holds the water. The tanks fill in about 12 seconds and are infused with a foam concentrate once they are filled to capacity. As the water is expelled from the aircraft the concentrate is mixed with the water, creating a foam the thickness of shaving cream.
