Hi,
My communications company is in need of an affordable and small snowcat. The BR100+ or similarly sized snowcat seems perfect. We have 3 high country tower sites that we've taken a snowmobile (until it gets stuck and then snowshoe in from) up till now. They're forest roads that usually start out half dirt/snow, and then plenty of powder by the time you get to the top... with lots of trees hanging over the sides. That's why i think the narrower tracks of the BR100+ would be perfect. Can you put rubber tracks on them if the aluminum tracks are in need of replacement? I'd think the aluminum would get banged up pretty good where the roads are half snow half dirt/rocks.

Anyways, hopefully someone sees this who's looking to sell their BR100+. They seem rare though...
Thanks,
Bob C

Welcome to the group . You need to start a new thread to get a better response . We got a few folks here that know their Bombi's

welcome,

as a communication guy I feel your pain... where about are you located at?

is there any side hills you have to deal with? or is it just deep?

how much rock are you driving over? then how deep of snow will you be trying to go over, the 18" all season tracks can be run over rocks and gravel with very little damage due to lower profile, but they are less aggressive in deep snow, so if you have soft snow steep grades you may get stuck, the more aggressive wider tracks go through deep snow with no problems, but are not really that good on rocky terrian, maybe a hagglunds or rubber tracked tucker would work better?? hard to have a machine that will do everything.

Sierra Nevadas (california)

No sidehill action... just forest access roads that get closed for winter.

Thanks. We could actually trailer in the cat as far as we could, and then get it on snow. It's actually pretty decent dirt/gravel roads anyways under all that snow; not too many large rocks.

sounds like the snow tracks would be the way to go for you... but I am still stuck on the sleds getting stuck.... were they just trail machines? if so then you should be ok, I am just trying to get a feel for the conditions.

being able to trailer to the snow and no side hills really opens up some options for you, I would thing at least, so the only limiting factor is narrow groups of trees?

Not knowing much about snowmobiles, the only one we have access to is built for speed and have a narrow track... so on just a gradual incline and powder, it'll just sink and I'll have to snowshoe the rest of the way... and then spend a half hour just digging it out and getting it turned around for the way back down.

So for (hopefully) a little bit more money, buy a used snowcat rather than a widetrack snowmobile. That way I can bring someone along for safety reasons, and we can stay dry in the cab and bring gear with us.

I'm gonna focus on getting one this spring/summer, and can work on it (if it needs work) so that it'll be ready for next winter.

Bob,

Almost all snowmobiles use the same width track; 15". Some Ski Doo's use a 16" wide track.

The machines built for deep snow have long tacks with deep lugs on the tracks. The tracks aren't wider, just a lot longer. For example, my 2008 Polaris 800 Dragon has a 163" with 2.5" lugs. A mid-west or east coast machine might have a 122" track with .75" lugs.

Utility type snowmobiles such as Arctic Cat Bearcat, Yamaha VK and Ski Doo Skandic WT's have a 20 inch wide track and usually 156 inch length. They work much better in deep snow and access for sites than the smaller snowmobiles used for recreation. I have 2 Bearcats that are amazing work horses with the 660 four stroke Suzuki 3 cylinder engines that we use for work snowmobiles around our remote home.

Here is a link to the 2009 Bearcat Utilty snowmobile:

For a smaller snow cat the BR100+ is an easy to operate snow cat that does most everything very good but is a little rare to find. It has the 2.3L engine coupled to an automatic trans. They handle very easily with a good ride. The wide track is a necessity for deep snow. I like the smaller Thiokol type Imps and Super Imps for ease of trailering and deep snow ability also. These can be purchased in decent condition for just slightly more than a new WT snowmobile.

My mistake, I forgot about the utility sleds.

But checking out both the Bearcat and the Skandic, they only have 1.25" lugs. They are also quite a bit heavier than the mountain performance class machines.

I snowmobile a fair amount and the riding is typically climbing hills and "boondocking", all in pretty much un-tracked powder. I sincerely doubt a utility sled could go to the same places.

The guys I ride with are always looking for an "edge". A few have nitrous oxide injection, two have turbocharged machines, etc. If the utility class machines were better at boondocking and hillclimbing than the sleds we ride I guarantee somebody would ride one and pretty soon everyone would have them.

LOL, you must ride with the same guys I know. :) the new skido 800 with a 163 track is just plain sick at where it can go... even without the mods.
