Daughter expressed an interest in band so we're going to give it a shot.
No string instruments so we're in the wind section.

She initially chose trumpet but going into the winter months (where she's practicing indoors), we talked her into something a little more "soothing". <<<< How's that for a choice of words. :thumb:

So, the flute is her choice.

Anyone have one sitting in the attic they would like to sell?

bz,

heres is a suggestion, rather than buy a flute right off the bat see if you can "rent" one from a local music store. They usually rent for really cheap.
Then if your daughter is really serious about it, then buy one.

Thanks WW.

I spoke with the music instructor and he said they rent for about $35/4 months.
I looked on e-bay and I can buy a new one for slightly more than that and there's loads of them for under $100.
If nobody here finds one in their attic in the near attic, I'll probably hit e-bay. If my daughter doesn't like it, it'll go on here or e-bay for sale.

Don't buy one from E-bay, they are cheap crap!! Rent a high quality one from your music store. Trust me on this.

Rent one first, you dont want cheap instruments. My daughter played flute and picalo 6 years in band.............I dont remember what the good ones were, but they were more than 100. They also were worth the difference.

Starting out though , renting is best

My wife and both my boys are taking violin lessons. Now I know what it sounds like when someone tortures a cat.

OK, you talked me into renting...

I spoke with the music teacher before going to e-bay. He said that the flutes made by Gemeinhardt, Armstrong or Yamaha are all good (and that's what I was checking).

Mrs. Zoom is arranging a 4-month rental for now. If Ms. little zoom wants to continue, we'll look at purchasing then unless someone here finds a decent one in their attic and wants to sell.

Hey Bone,

At least I was able to talk my daughter out of the trumpet (which was her first choice). Her practice time will be when nobody else is in the house... My son and I will go outside.

I was given a "free" clarinet by my aunt for my daughter. It was a top model back in the 60's. By the time I paid for it to be updated, dry-rotted parts replaced etc., I could have bought a new one. :pat:

I assume flutes don't have any parts that would dry rot, do they?

Absolutely they do. Each valve has a cork (synthetic?) gasket, and the sections also have a cork gasket to hold them together.

I'm showing that the only musical instrument I can play is the radio. :o

Those are the things that cost me a pretty penny to replace on the "freebie" for my daughter.

bz,

If it works out for your daughter you may also want to try a local pawn shop. One of my friends in NC bought a guitar for her son that way. She picked it up real cheap. Not knowing anything about guitars. When she took it to the music store for tuning she found out it was a top of the line product.

We were in the same boat as you, but after talking to a guy at the local music store, we bought one for about $400 and if after the year she doesn't want to continue, he will buy it back for at least 75% ($300). For us to rent it with the insurance and other charges it was going to be like $150 to $200 a year. I can't remember the name brand of the one we got, but it seems nice enough for now. I can barely hear her practicing in her room. She's only been at it since the start of the school year and doesn't sound too bad.

Good luck

Bump.

Looks like my daughter wants to continue playing.

Anyone have a flute for sale?

PM if you would prefer.

Murph - You still have yours?

Yes she has it, she won't be home until really late tonight. Will check with her and drop you a PM. I may not be able to get back to you until tomorrow.
