I spent an interesting hour going back and reading the Backpacker Magazine gear recommendations for the past few years. It's amazing what is available on the market today. My "new" gear is about 20 years old and bears no resemblance to what is available now. But, you know what? If I ever find myself in -20° temperatures, I don't care what I look like. My old stuff works and works very well. Heaven forbid that I ever have to use it in earnest again.
