Hmmm, there must be variations.
I use alt 2 4 8 for the degree symbol. Here it's alt 0176. They both work.

Another thing to note. You have to use the number pad on the right. It doesn't work with the numbers above the letters.

I've always used the alt 0176. I never knew that alt2-4-8 worked. I think that I can remember that a lot more easily. Thanks.

its called ASCII ART. it goes back to the Commodore 128 days......... you can make pictures (kinda) with them http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0LEVjawfLBTelcAE6cPxQt.;_ylu=X3oDMTByODJtaWUzBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMwRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkAw--/RV=2/RE=1404103985/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.glassgiant.com%2fascii%2f/RK=0/RS=esoVvyLoTFQ.iDbeTMbyaw4l1G4-

and http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0L...I_picture/RK=0/RS=kOm3M8UCbCml4S1gc_CQKMwDKOw-

the ASCII characters are standardized and have certain control functions when used with the CTRL key instead of the ALT key.

in the old BBS days, a CTRL G would make the other persons computer make a ringing sound
