Gone But Not Forgotten
Sadly not many have survived. These hens had some good sized clutches this spring. Fox or coyotes must have hit them hard.

Survival of the fittest. That's why certain critters have such large litters. There are just enough at the end of the day to perpetuate the species, and to provide some good hunting as well. I wish we had more coyotes here to cull the urban deer population. There were a lot of twins born this year with the mild winter, and I've seen two does with 3 fawns still in spots just this past week. Don't know if they had triplets or picked up orphans along the way, but the problem is finally at a point that the city mothers are having a bow season in the city limits. Permits are very selective, but it will help.

Deer have no problem adapting to the suburbs. Folks don't want to kill bamby till they start destroying shrubs and flowers. They did so much damage at Valley Forge and Gettysburg national parks they had to have snipers come in and kill them till they dropped the population down.
