Tucker Sno Cat U Joints

How do you know when to replace the u joint? My seem pretty good but have a little play back and forth. Is that normal?

I would think there has to be some slop in the system somewhere.

If you have play in them it is time to replace them. Not a real bad job if you have a good vice or a press. If they have movement water and debris can get in and destroy the needle bearings. Replace them now before you tear up the yokes.

How about the joint between the transfer case and transmission. have not looked closely but is it easy to get out? Does it come out?

would it make sense that there are two different ujoints? Got the front drive shaft out last night. The one pressed in the short yoke transfer case end says S55 3 Made in Usa which is a spicer 55. The u joint I in the driveshaft differential end says 4 C USA T or 4 0 USA T.

Cant seem to find the second part number. They look very similar. Are they the same all 4?

For me a trip to one of the local machine shops is all I would need to do to identifiy and replace what U join parts I need. Any chance you may have a welding/repair shop in your area? This is where I would start.

Regards, Kirk

A decent caliper will measure the od of the joint as well as the diameter of knuckles. That is all you really need to know for a replacement. NAPA should have them.

I believe I have cracked the code. Attached is the orig build sheet.

ON the prop shaft line the top one says 5" and that is the shaft between trans and transfer case.

Bottom one are the two other driveshafts. That s55 part number is what came out of the bottom.

The top remains mystery. It measures the same but has a 4 C USA T.

That S55 is a regular part. Will get 4 and let you know how I do.

Cleveland s55-55-2 fix perfect. Regular part . Changed easy. Rear ones were beat. Good thing I changed it. Cheap and easy.

They are a lot easier to fix when you don't have to. Cheaper too and sure beats laying in the snow and tearing things apart.
