Tucker questions

Going to look at a 70's Tucker this week in the area. Bad motor & body is fair to good. Only major concern is what to look for on the pontoons, rollers, linkage etc... wear & tear, problem spots, issues that could change my mind on buying it or make me hagle the price down. I think I have read every post on the forums about Tuckers, but still feel like I don't know enough.
Haven't seen it yet to take pics, going on what we were told & a gut feeling (snocat sickness:w00t2:) & yes the better half is just grinning & not saying much!:whistling: Any thoughts-comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Michelle

Michelle,

I don't want to offend anybody, but I think it's fair to say the steel track Tuckers have some disadvantages compared to the ones with rubber belts and steel grouser bars.

The steel tracks use special flanged bearings (which are no longer available from Tucker) and they use a whole bunch of them. Each of the track links uses two flanged bearings. Now think of all the track links on one track then multiply by four. I think you'll be well over 200...

I know Cook's Equipment in Vermont had some of those bearings for sale at about $40.00 each, but that was a few years ago. Some quick public math: 200 x 40 = 8,000.00! It's highly unlikely they would all be bad, but equally unlikely they're all good.

Even assuming they are all in great shape, just greasing the machine is a major undertaking.

I think the steel track machines are somewhat louder as far as track noise. But on the plus side they have a major "coolness factor".

I would suggest you give Sno Trans a phone call. I think he could give you some good advice on what to look for, as well as some general pricing guidelines.

thhe bodies on the steel track tuckers look cool but cramped kind of like the old dodge power wagons i like the one that was converted to belted tracksif i were to take up a tucker project that might be the way i wuld go. i understand steel track gets great traction but i don't think i would want to trade all the work in upkeep for that traction there were two brought out here and they didn't fair well with the cnditions here with somuch wind blown ground the two that came out here also had early hemi motors in them dual points and 2 bbl carbs with chrysler industrial samped in the valve covers
