the atv club has a 1978 tucker 1342 with a 318 and a 5spd trans. question is what is the trans model and make ? it is starting to make a very load grinding noise in 4th (direct?) and poped out of 4th today ,just like to know what to start looking for before we pull it out ,we have about 8hrs of grooming left to finish the trail system and are hoping it will last:unsure:

Hope this helps - my '78 1642 has a New Process Gear 540, I think your 1342 has the same. Look for the casting numbers on the side of the trans for reference when talking to a rebuild shop.

first check the oil level your symptoms are that of low oil i have seen that many times before bad enough if you have to buy hard parts on my vw trns i screwed up the case and just had to throw it away.

thanks guys :) it is -20c out and I really don't want to climb under it yet, hopr to have it in the shop by tonight if all goes well and we don't get stuck tday on a boggy trail

Broken Grouser is correct; New Process 540. There should be a data plate on the right side.

New Process made some 5-speeds that had an overdrive fifth gear, however I don't believe Tucker used any of those and I think you'll find your fifth gear ratio is 1:1.

The 5 spd will have a lower first and reverse gear ratio than a 4 spd. If the engine is a Mopar wouldn't they use any Dodge pickup tranny from a 2wd or 4x4 with a divorced transfer case??? These trannys are commonly found in 60's and early 70's Dodge truck D300 series and up.

According to my chrysler book, the NPG's were used. It looks like they made a 540 & 542 in the 5 speed transmission and they also had the 435 and 445 in the 4 speed transmission. The repair manual has a break down and disassembly of the all of those transmissions.

found the data plate yesterday and it is the npg 540, but we never made it to the shop last night ,the boggy trail got the best of us:sad: read my other post on grooming the boggy trail:unsure:

The 540 and 542 are similar models. I have the 542L (like you noticed, it's on the data plate) and the 542L is a 5 spd with a 7.24:1 1st and a 1:1 5th. The clutch slave cylinder is from a 68 Dodge with a manual transmission. The clutch master cylinder is is paired with the brake master and the unit is found on a 1964 Chevrolet C series truck. I replaced both as rebuilding them was more expensive. I found a GM repair manual on E-bay for the 542. Ford and Dodge used the 542 but the GM manual seems to be more available. I had planned on changing the gear oil in the trans because it had sat for a while. Mine was a bit noisey at an idle and I found out this is fairly common. I have had alot of experince with New Process Gear transmissions and knew that if taken care of properly, they could make noise for a long time and still function properly. I changed the oil and it made a big difference. The old oil was a bit milky due to some moisture. Warm up the engine and let it idle or drive it for a while the dump the trans oil right away and let it drain for as long as you can. I hope this helps and maybe it will be ok. The detents for the shift rails in the top cover is one possibility for it popping out of gear. Best regards..
