Tucker carberator

Has anyone had issues with carbs jetted for high alltitude running poorly at sea level? I'm not sure if I have a jetting issue or a bad carb.

I have a Tucker 343a with a chrysler 318 and a carter 2 barrel carb on it that was working on elk Mt. In Wyoming at roughly 11,500 ft. I rebuilt the carb because it only seemed to run on choke but ther is no difference. It will not idle without it on half choke, I'm beginning to think this carb is jetted for high elevation. Would this cause that kind of problem?

so it would idle at 11,500 ? was that before you rebuilt the carb?while the engine is running, spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold to carb and intake manifold to engine in short bursts to see if you have any vacuum leaks,(engine idle will increase if you hit a leak)though it sounds like something is clogging the idle circuit, you may have to disassemble it again and use compressed air to blow out the circuit, some times soaking it in solvent isn't enough.

I assume it worked fine at 11,500, I didn't own it then. When I bought it it was delivered to sea level so I am not sure how it ran up high and yes that was before I cleaned it. I have sprayed either all around the manifold hunting for leaks and have had no luck locating one. Thanks for your info.

the older carbs are not that hard to figure out unless it has been assembled wrong or is missing parts, who knows what was changed(IE jets /excel pump size/float etc.)and who's been working on it before you got it.

post some pics man...love the old tuckers!

like an early post suggested check for vaccuum leaks also put on a vaccuum gauge make shure the engine is in good mechanical condition likr timing and steady vaccuum around 15 to 18 inches if the gauge flutters suspect a bad intake valve if it's bad enough it will act the same as a vaccuum leak

if you are going to kit it you will need the number off the carb to get the right kit i'm rebuilding my snow trac carb right now it was doing the same thing and i found th efloat bowl 1/2 full of water and it sat all summer so it's in the ultrasonic cleaner as we speak
