Trumpet (wanted?)

My son came home this week and said he want's to join the school band. He chose the trumpet. I'm not as happy with his choice compared to his sister's flute as it relates to practicing at home, but at least it's not the drum which was originally his first choice.

So, like we did a few years ago with my daughter and the flute, I turn to my FF friends for any thoughts, advice... on what's good and bad when I go to look at (buy) a trumpet.

Not sure if it matters, but he's 9 years old (are there different size trumpets?). He's very strong physically and only second fiddle to the school's first string soccer players when it comes to running (breathing) endurance.

A follow-up thanks to Murph (thcri) who sold me a flute for my daughter. She plays it well.

If anyone has a trumpet you would consider selling, please let me know.

PS.

Dear Abby,

I feel I need to ask since "band" seems like a "weak" activity to many and I don't want to subject my son to teasing (just before he whoops their ass).

My son wants to be in everything. Would I be a bad parent if I told him "no" to joining the football team? If he joins the band this year and is in his 4th year of Cub Scouts, is that enough running around for me? Remember, I'm old now. I'd love to let him play football for the fun and macho factor but
a) He's 9. Can I wait until he's in High School?
b) I'm a bit concerned about him possibly getting a serious injury at this age. He would most likely be a linebacker (or maybe strong safety) and he plays really hard.
c) Practice is 4 nights a week + Saturdays during the school year. 5 days per week in the summer. I think that's too much for him... or is that me?

Would it be OK if I just got him a rifle or something instead.

Have you given any thought about checking with any music stores about short term rentals (not knowing where you live) but some of the smaller towns around here have them as well as Wichita.

That way he could try out what they have at the store and get some proffesional advice . If he finds something he likes he could rent it for a weekend or longer before you decide which one or what type of instrument to buy .

We did that with our son to get him to try everything that might interest him other then drums. But eventually that is what seemed to be what suited him best but when it came time to buy a set he had no doubts of what he wanted. Just a thought.

Thanks CB,

Yes, there are rental places but it's a few months rental at at time.

I did a 15 second search on Craigslist and there were some there that were in "decent" condition (good enough for a beginner) for under $50 and they went up from there.

I come to FF for "professional advise"

No advise on a trumpet, but I would suggest investing in a good pair of ear protectors(for you). A beginner on those things can make a cat fight sound quiet.

As a old trumpet player Cowboy is right rent one just in case it is a fad.
my parents rented one (school had a program for this) for me yearly for about 4 years and there was an option to buy it out right which they did.
That is how we did it 45 years ago.
When my grandfather passed I was given his Baldwin.
I passed on my 1st trumpet to my nephew when he got the bug (at least he still plays:smile: I don't).

I checked ebay they seem pretty cheep on there but the bay wasn't available 45 years ago.

Ha ha, I wanted to play drums but my parents made me play trumpet cause they had an old one in the closet. My mom actually put her foot thru my snare drum. I used to buy and sell them on Ebay. What ever you do, stay away from the chinese ones like they sell at Wally World, there's nothing to ruin an aspiring musician like a lousy instrument. Go onto Ebay and look for an Olds Ambassador, they started making them in 1946, and try to get one made before 1968 (serial # 65,00 and below), but that's not that important. These are considered to be about the finest student horns ever made and are still favored by many pro players. They made so many that they can be had cheap, less than $100 on Ebay usually and sometimes less than $50 if you're patient. And start him going to www.trumpetherald.com, a great resource for training and everything trumpet. Good luck!

My pleasure. There are a lot of other good student horns to be ha, go to that forum and look for a thread on best student horns or something like that and you'll get a lot of advice.
