Track-Master for Sale

I know nothing about that machine, but Bill and Mary Guthrie, the owners of Sno Trans/Sales Unlimited, are genuinely nice people. Bill has probably forgotten more about Sno Cats than most of us will ever know.

There is also a 5-belt Snow-Master for sale at Peterson Equipment in Logan, Utah:

http://www.petersonequipment.com/used.html

It is also blue and yellow and has the fenders cut back... It would fit right in with your Trac-Master! :yum::yum::yum:

It is NOT a 1962 model year so that is a typo in the ad... It is atleast a 1969-70 or newer. And 1962 can't be the serial number either as then it would be a 3-belt ST4.

Teledawg thanks!,

D'OH! right in my back yard. My son lives in Logan. Just sent him a text message to go check it out tomorrow. I wonder why half the fenders are missing on these two cats. :yum: Must be karma, yellow, blue and missing half the fenders.

No problem man. I just happen to stumble accross it while looking for something else... I ment to post it earlier, but forgot to...

OK, so my son went out and checked out the Track-Master in Logan. They chopped the roof and added a 4" lift for the roof. Tires[tubed], tracks in excellent condition. Steele floor, wipers work, heater works, defroster works. Moved the battery outside by the fuel tank. Oil cooler on front. Apparently, comes with a jack and an axe. Drivers seat has a built in shock absorber.

Owner, picked it up out of Canada at an auction along with two other cats. Mostly been used for company parties and driving back/forth to their cabin. Motor has been rebuilt. Hydraulic steering brake [wondered about that used to have one on my sandrail curious how it would work on a snowcat]. They are asking $25k for it. I'm all a sudden feeling very good about the 4k I paid for mine. Looks beautiful, but I don't even have close the number of "honey do list" points I would need to sneak that one by her. Probably need to have her read all of Lyndons stories and see if she gets the collectors bug. If they still have it in August when its 105 degrees out I'll inquire again. :whistling:

Owner mentioned someone in Sweden was looking at it, However, was having trouble raising the 6-7k to have it shipped.

Wow, $25K!

I confess my experience is somewhat limited; but I have a hard time believing that a Volkswagen powered Sno Cat has much power.

The general rule of thumb is that you lose three percent (of horsepower) per thousand feet of elevation gain. Aren't the air cooled VW engines rated at 36 HP at sea level?

For those with experience, how do they perform at say 8,000 feet in deep snow?

Well, our property is 7200-7800 feet. I've had no problem (except for oil getting hot) in deep snow. Track-Master weighs around 3700lbs, with the extra wide tracks it has a very light foot print on snow. I have pulled out a few stuck snowmobiles. I've had no problems climbing hills in 3rd gear. However, I believe my engine has been modified and is over 1900 cc. Could be wrong, but it has plenty of power. My son indicated that this one that was for sale was a 1600cc engine. My personal experience is limited,[limited as I have no brakes on mine. :whistling:] but from what I've read these cats will go just about anywhere your brave enough to venture.

Let me ask you guys this. If you "Owned" Peterson Equipment and could use ANY snowcat in your collection to get you FAMILY to and from your cabin what vehicle would you choose? Well the answer is he chose the Snow Master! What does that tell you about how good they are. They perfom better than any "NEW" 150K plus rig in the deep powder. Yes thay cant spin around in the own tracks. Yes they are noisier than the "NEW" rigs but they still smokem in the deep powder. You canot beat a Snow Master in the deep stuff period!

point taken. Owner did indicate that the only reason they were selling it was that their cabin was 7 miles up the canyon and it was slow going to get there.

Still, looking at the pictures it is a very nice looking rig.

That sounds like a challenge?

Virtual Gauntlet thrown down?

I was talking to a Spryte owner here in Utah as we were eying each others cats and he indicated that Safety One Inc. out of Colorado comes over to Monte Cristo, Utah each winter with some cats for perspective owners to test drive. Hopefully, next year we have another good year of snow and I will have to take that challenge and report back. As said, so far I have been able to climb most of hills around our property, at least the ones I have a clear path to roll back on. Next Year, we are planning a trip to some property in Colorado over by Reudi Reservoir and I want to drive the road over Hagerman Pass, Co (11952') into Leadville and back. Thomasville to Eagle,CO would be another great trip, 10500' at the top.

Definetly, Yellowstone would be fun in any cat.

Thanks for the information.

It appears there are some strong opinions on the subject!

I'm not trying to start a fight, just trying to get more informed, but why did they go out of business if their product was so good?

I'm not trying to start a fight either, and for the horsepower that they had they do a very good job. they are noisy. but many are also I've driven most
all cats produced out there over the years have owned several hundred machines and built machines from scratch. they do well in the snow but other have done better. but for the weight to horsepower ratio they do very good.
to be equal or better with that 40 horsepower there is not only a couple of machines that will compare. close and with modification to the stock machines
they can be made even better
