Too hot/humid to work on the property!

We're doing some big projects around our property this summer and I figured the best way to tackle some of them is by hiring a college kid to help me out.

He and I were down the hill doing some demolition of a deck area early this evening. I had a cooler of water, soda, juice with us and we both had a couple bottles to drink so we were both attempting to stay hydrated. Started working about 5pm. Quit at 6:45. Obviously didn't work very long.

Still, he took a few swings with a sledge hammer . . . stopped . . . said he was getting dizzy. A while later, I was prying up some boards and the same thing happened to me. WTF? We quit for the evening after less than 2 hours of work.

Is it that hot out? Could we both be that out of shape? Heck we had a tractor to pull posts and do some of the demolition so it wasn't like we were actually doing that much.

Came up to the house, sat in the cool air conditioning, drank a beer and cooled off for almost an hour before he took off. I sat for another hour before I had the energy to actually eat dinner.

So I have to ask, is it the HEAT (90F) or is it the HUMIDITY (95%) that beats up the human body?

I think the humidity cuts down on your body's ability to give off heat by sweating . I know the humidity has been terrible for about 6 weeks now. Can't wait for fall myself.

It's the humidity. I bet you were working where you didn't catch much breeze, too.
Had an episode like that Monday morning. Since it was too hot and humid to do much here either, I didn't. As a result, I didn't drink much water over the weekend. Monday found me in the middle of the streets in a part of town with lots of big trees. Vactors throw off a LOT of heat. While putting tools away, I got dizzy and felt funny in my chest. Not heart attack funny, just funny.

After lunch, I stopped by the clinic and had my blood pressure checked. "My" nurse said it was slightly elevated. She told me to hit the water hard, throw in some Powerade or Gatorade. Hell! I even drank pickle juice!

Tuesday found me feeling better and I have been doing a better job of staying hydrated to this point.

Heat and humidity ain't nuttin' to fool with. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Lay off the beer and soda. Stick with water or Gatorade-type drinks to get your electrolites back up to snuff.

OK that makes sense. Sweating is the body's way to use evaporative cooling but if its too humid for sweat to evaporate then its just darn hot. We've been having high humidity lately because of frequent rains. We had almost no breeze to help cool us.

We had shade, and it was early evening, so it didn't seem like sun was a big issue in heating us.

I never really thought about why I'm miserable when its humid, but tonight really knocked me for a loop.

It's the humidity for sure. A few days ago it was 75 degrees at 8:00 AM - but 96%humidity. 75 should be tolerable. But it was not. Not much cooling going on.. body wise.
