I am looking at a Thiokol spryte for 2000 dollars but the rear end needs to be over hauled I was thinking why not a ford 9" rear end and put rotors and calipers on it with 2 power brakes out of a pick up for steering? I have no idea if anyone has done this if so id like to hear how the steering turned out

heres what im going to be working with its rough

your idea with an auto rearend isn't a good idea you will likely break axles and at best have poor performance with the vehicle wanting to pitch one way or another. the oc-12 you have will down shift the inside track to steer.

if you need an oc-12 I know where there is one I could acquire if you are on the west coast it may make sense.

Don't do it.....
If a reg truck diff worked ,then manufactures would have used them......
The planetary steering diffs don't skid steer by stopping one sprocket ,the split the power ,(more to outside sprocket)
In my opinion its a sin to do something like that, put the tracks on a truck if you want to do that ..
Classic cats are still around because the design worked
What's wrong with the diff , bands and bearings are still avalible and other hard parts used.
You'll be much happier with the performance and durability of the planetary diff.
It will cost a little bit but your cats value will also go up ...not down.
Lots of parts sources and info on here to help you......cheers and good luck

looks like a dana 30 in the front of that little snow cat in the video and im pretty sure it would be pretty hard to "bust" a ford 9" or so to say if I used a dana 70 rear end that's a pretty durable axle and if I did go with refurbishing the original rear end what would the price be I don't want to dump 5,000 dollars into a rear end when I could build a set up that would work, and has anyone refurbish a rearend? whats the total cost cause I wanna restore this most of the parts are cheep motor and transmission wise cleets and belts are relatively cheep

you under estimate the power of those big tracks the oc-12's like yours could break axles if you stuck the extra wide 3700 tracks on them you could break a 70 shaft in the right conditions I would be guessing I could get salvage rites to the machine im talking about for about 500 bucks than a few bucks for the removal and shipping. I figure about a grand landed in anchorage. what is your location there may be a solution closer to home.

Those automotive diffs are tinker toys compared to a brake steer diff in a snow cat the size of a Sprite. The toy cat in the video doesn't weigh much and you cann't ask the owner how long that diff lasted in even that application. If it worked a Manufacturer would already be doing it, as has been said. Don't underestimate what torque multiplication can do with no give or slip in the system. What you might think is strong isn't...
