Thiokol IMP 1404 air cleaner

Hey folks, I’ e been bitten by the “bug”. I’m new here and about to pick up a new to me IMP 1404 and factory trailer. Machine is in fair condition but apparently doesn’t have any air filtration for the Ford v-4 engine. I don’t believe the current owner ever had filtration on it in his 20 years of ownership. (Not the best scenario) While I found the original ford part number, has anyone converted theirs to a Donaldson style filter or similar?
how about the 90 degree air horn for the top of the solex carb? Any pictures would be appreciated of the factory air cleaner and its location. I don’t have the IMP in my possession. I’m about 2 weeks out from picking it up.

Thanks for the help and I look forward to being here.

I will send some pics of the adapter plate I put on mine, any machine shop can make you one if you can’t I know a guy! Hopefully somebody with the factor 90 can send you a part number, but Bombardier used Ford parts from the 60s…

I switched away from the factory Donaldson oil-bath air cleaner about ten years ago and replaced it with a small K&N filter. It seemed like the hole in the doghouse for the hose between the filter & carb let a lot of noise into the cabin and I didn't think I needed that great of a filter -- there's not a lot of dust in a snowy environment. I taped over the doghouse hole when I installed sound insulation around the engine.

The factory filter mounted behind the dash on a bracket behind the driver's-side headlight. I just happen to have my dash out for a wiring project, so I was able to take a few photos (see below). Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks a lot Ron, that really helps. Not having my machine near me, can you tell me the diameter of the air horn or filter would connect? Same with the Donaldson. I assume your KN is secured with a hose clamp around the outside? Also, what did you use for sound insulation under your hood?
I appreciate your response. Thanks Ron.

The K&N filter is held on w/ a hose clamp. Looks like the diameter of the carb is about 52mm.

I think I purchased the sound insulation material for the doghouse from Lowes. It isn't the best or most effective material, but it was cheap and readily available. I used two layers of 1/8" thick foil-faced insulation and foil tape. You can see from the photos below that it has aged a bit, but still seems to be holding up pretty well.

Even with the sound insulation, however, the cabin of the cat is still noisy. I've resorted to an intercom w/ headsets and that seems to work the best.

Regards

Ron

Thanks Ron for the info. I’ll start looking into a K/N setup. I like the intercom headsets. That’s a nice machine you have.

Definitely need an intercom if you want to communicate with anyone. Our 1200 is actually louder inside than a Huey.
