The price of livin in the country !!!

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Its still worth it to me , but I just paid $20 plus a ton for rock to be delivered from 65 miles away . We have no rock in our area . 64 tons of rock equals $1400 bucks!!!

I now have the barn/ apartment surrounded in 2 1/2" base rock . At least that is better than the 5 " of mud that I been fighting !!

With the price of fuel that is not too bad. Would cost me almost that much around here for the same reason. Crushed limestone is expensive since the only quarries are each over 40 miles away.

That's exactly what I'm charging for 2B limestone ($12/ton material only cost) delivery INSIDE a 10 mile radius. It definitely would go up if I had to go 65 miles. The fuel alone for a 130 mile round trip would be $70. I'm sure they are using at least a 7 ton dump and probably a tri-axle (25 ton) which still ain't bad ............ wipe the mold off the 50's Al .......... :)

I'm just a neighbor saver that charges $60 for a 2 1/2 ton delivery, $30 material cost leaving $30 for fuel, equipment, and labor .............. :glare:

Maybe I need to raise my prices ............

Its $425 bucks delivered for a 10 ton load of inch & a half white rock & it comes from only 3 miles away, Damn near double from last years price :hammer:

I cant get a bigger truck in without doing a lot of serious tree trimming which my wife does not want me to do . But if I could its 25 bucks a ton ( 25 ton end dump ) and $175 delivery charge from the quarry about 40 miles away . :glare:

Damn CB, I believe I'd dump it where I could and use one of the tractors to move/spread. I have a 25 ton delivered to the house and then I load from the pile and deliver when the neighbors start calling for driveway material.

For me and my 3/4 ton van (10-12 mpg in the winter) to leave the driveway and make a call within a 10 mile radius would cost you $75. Here we call it a service call (and it also covers the first 1/2 hour of labor) so we can hope to break even at the very least. Free "guesstimates" are now given over the phone, and no longer in person. Most people are understanding with fuel up, but every now and then I get some old codger that has not let loose of 1965 prices. I had one actually say I was evil for charging a service call, and that nobody should make that kind of money. You can't explain to them that I don't get to keep the $75 for myself. Vehicle and equipment maintenance (just spent $700 on tires), fuel, insurance (3 kinds) and common parts stocking in the vehicle eat up most of it when you carry it all across the year. I don't even let it bother me any more.

Be happy the guy was willing to bring you the stone. Did you give him a big hug when he got there? Truck drivers need love, too!

Dawg I tryed that last year . The only place a big rig could dump it is our incoming 1/4 mile long drive which is on an oil & gas pipeline easement which runs right through the center . They raised hell with me because it blocked their access which they constantly tear the hell out of . :hammer:

It rained before I was able to get it all moved with my tractor & i tore the rest of my drive up so bad getting it to where I needed it that I had to get 2 more smaller loads to repair the ruts I made after it dried up .

Thats the only thing I have against our property but theres nothing I can do about it . The only good thing is the pipe that ran on our side of the property has been dug up & plugged that ran along the 50 foot wide easement all along our south border, but at any time they could put another one if they so chose to, so I dont push my luck .

Round here, and we get alot more snow than banana belt Elk city. There are lots of gravel guys, but they only work in the summer and fall, sometimes you have to order stuff when it's available.

I'm not complaining about the price but showing the local cost of where we live . I have ordered from these guys before and will again soon . They bring me 32 tons in a truck with 3 tag alxes and a 4 axle pup trailer . That thing is 61 feet from front axle to back axle !!. Need about 1/2 mile to just turn around . I had them dump it at the top of the road and then transported it with the little dump trailer and my pickup down to the ranch . It took 2 days ,but its worth it !

The last load I got in the fall was $453.00 delivered for 22.33 tons. That same guy has hauled me at least 12 loads for my road on top of 210 tri-axle loads of creek gravel had delivered when I built the road. He has also delivered 2 loads of mulch and 2 loads of sand for me. It costs big money to keep a truck on the road. My single axle GMC was over $800 a year for tags and insurance. Plus fuel tax tamp and other stuff. I would imagine his 80,000 tag is around $2500 alone. Right now you can't haul heavy loads unless you are a municipality.

we have the only rock quary in western alaska a few years ago some tree hugger association filed a law suit to block the reopening of the quary, which the material is used for sea walls in surounding comunitys because it now presented an ideal oocation for falcon nesting. as for transportation cost it set in well for me shuttling to safety 70 bucks to fill an 18 gallon tank takes a chunk out of the bottom line

Heck Al, all you gots to do is buy a dump truck like the Big Dawg did. It works and you'll be real popular with your neighbors. Just do it. You got all kinds of other kewl toys already, what's one more? :poke: :yum:
