I was first introduced to the nuances of the word in Navy boot camp. We had been sent to a week of galley duty when the NCO in charge explained the rules to us. When he finished he asked if we thought that was a lot of chicken shit. I luckily avoided the urge to respond that it was more like bull. Otherwise I'd probably still be there.

I still don't quite fully understand the subtle differences among bull, horse and chicken.
