I think the A-10 is the new gun fighter, not so much for air to air, but from the sky to the ground... But the new helo's and other fighters have been pretty much untouched in combat for the most part in the US air fleet...

Kind of a hard call to make, I would say as a dedicated gun fighter, I would vote for the F86.
 
The reason that I called it the last true gunfighter is that It''s replacement was the F4 . It was supposed to be the acft that could shoot down anything BVR . It took the introduction of the F4E to get guns back onto fighters . It was a hard earned lesson on the part of Our pilots that missiles suck at close range .

Yeah, the first F4's were pretty lame until they put the gun pod on it.

We see the new Raptor's coming and going overhead every day, they are pretty loud, and every now and then they do a quick scramble and up and gone... Don't think I would want one of those looking at me through their optics...
