The dreaded 601 slave cylinder...

It's been a hastle for some and a breeze for others... pieceing together this and that or custom machining, etc... These are of course new and replacement parts start from today on so they're obviously readily available off the shelf. I will be buying some and also replacement parts, kits, etc... so I can have 'new old stock' 30 years from now when I can no longer even see to drive one but can pass it on to a new owner. :thumb:

Here is a replacement cylinder for the slave 601 differential.

Model rc121

About $400-500 for the whole thing wihch is generally the cost of just the piston. Yea, pro's and con's but availability is pretty darn big pro. The masters are NAPA. You can also drop a kit in original slaves from NAPA but depends on condition of the rest of the unit if a replacement like this makes best sense.

I've had some calls for them and did much expensive research on a replacement and the RC-121 came out on top. Then Boggie told me he has got the OEM type from Wagner (for less money than the Simplex), so I began referring all 601/602 calls to him.

RC-121 prices... from my supplier Northwest Mine Supply in Wallace, (cost)
'04, $356. each
'05, $385. each
'07, $419. each

The seal kits are about $40.00 each

When I did the research I got in some Ram-Pac cyls, they are low quality (and more money) compared to the one piece construction of the Simplex cyls so I sent the Ram-Pac's back and paid the restocking charge. The Simplex fit the machine better, and are very high quality.

I called Simplex to ask about their cyl seals Brake Fluid compatability. The tech person would not say that it was OK, so asked about DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid... same answer. He would only agree that they are intended to be used with hydraulic fluid. I have understood that Hydraulic (mineral) oil is not compatable with the EDPM rubber in the master cyls. So I soaked some hydraulic seals (for some months) in the various fluids and the only one that showed expansion of the seal was the DOT-3 (conventional) Brake Fluid. Not very scientific without the dynamic action present in the cyls. but the best I could do at the time. Also, the Simplex is rated to 10,000 PSI and will never see that on a Thiokol.

I have always used DOT-5 SBF in my cat and I really prefer it even though its close to $30/quart. Its smoother, doesn't absorb water so no rust, and the parts last much longer...18 years for the slave seals in my homebuilt cat. Best of all, if spilled, it does not melt paint.

Those three sets of Simplex cyls I sold disclosing all this info as I was only trying to help out my customers. As far as I know they had no problems with them using them with the DOT-5.

Since then I have drawn up a design for the 601/602 slave cyl that I could make out of stainless steel but the stroke would be about half of what the OEM is. I don't think that would matter since brake band rod only moves about 1/2 inch or less but someone would have to be willing to try one out for me. In any case, they too would be spendy, and since Boggie has the Wagner cyls I just shelved the idea, but maybe its time to be revisited.

By the way, every sample of old 601/602 slaves that I've got from customers are by different makers.

Mainer, what is part number for that NAPA kit you mentioned?
