The day I was wounded hit me in 2005. Remember being under fire running getting to the line and then I felt it twice in my lower left leg. One bullet and then the 2nd feeling a burning pain falling down on my back yelling out my left lower leg. Luckily 3 guys in the unit I was in with got me out of there for safety calling in soldier down. Stayed there with me in pain hurting until medical came to get me out for the medical attention. Next time I knew, doctors looked at it and said not good to me, possible amputation of my left leg finding the bone was shattered. Ended up sending me to the military hospital in Germany which it was confirmed also finding infection there. Went into surgery which they amputated it below the knee. My family was contacted and they were hit hard. Mom remembers someone from the Marines at the front door telling her I was wounded and was in a military hospital in Germany. This was after she heard a knocking on the front door. Rest of my family got the news from mom. It effected them as well. Me, I was in the dumps big time seeing a stump with the lower leg gone at first. I still have the 2 bullets they pulled out and my uniform with the bullet holes in it somewhere. Have the boots as well Good thing was the guy that did it was shot dead, two in the chest. I still keep in touch with those 3 guys that pulled me out for safety being there until medical came and we have a great friendship to this day. Our bond is strong as well, all 3 are from Kentucky.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Thank you for your service.

I hope you're getting 100% disability from the VA. Did you know you can also get over $400 more for "Unemployability" added to the 100% ?

Those 3 guys that I keep in touch with,I have so much respect for also. They saved my life from me not getting hit from anymore bullets. I was a sitting duck for it when I went down.

I'm glad they helped you then and I'm glad you're staying in touch with them now. I find that other Vietnam Veterans help me a lot more than psychologists. I'm sure you enjoy talking with them.

What a strong person, I am still very afraid of gunshots until now.
Learned to overcome it was the biggest key. One was when I went to my local American Legion to sign up as a member. The members there helped and welcomed me in. Signed up and paid, they gave me so much great advice for what happened to me and friendships happened after that
