PC Mag has a good article on the latest in virus technology.

Panda Anti virus and Ad Aware Pro both scored high marks as did AVG Free edition. They bulked up their free offering where it is practically as powerful as the paid version. Avast is only mentioned to say they have not released their product for 2011 yet.

Wonder why they didn't include Microsoft's Security Essentials? I was skeptical of it for awhile and stay with AVG. Then I built a new computer (Intel I7 Quad Core 2.8 Ghz and 16 GB of RAM) and saw a dramatic drop in performance when I installed AVG that I went looking for something else. Read several good - great reviews of SE and went with it. That was back in September. I've not swapped all of my machines over to it and any that I work on, I'll switch over as well. So far no problems and haven't had any back to me with an infestation.

That's all my IP uses on all their in house computers......they swear by it.

That should have read, I've now swapped all of my machines over to it.

I've switched over to Security Essentials too. It doesn't seem to eat up the CPU power that the others did. Price was right too. ;)

Avast runs pretty lean. I've seen this on old computers. MS SE? No thanks.
If MS can't even code their own OS to be virus free from the get go, why would I trust them to do it as an after thought?

Just thought I would post this up. I had one of my customers bring a computer back to me that I worked on exactly 1 year ago. At that time I installed AVG & Malwarebytes on it. She was complaining of a virus on it - not sure how she knew it was there. I looked at it and saw a couple goofy things, but nothing that jumped out and said there is a virus. Ran scans from both AVG and malware. I uninstalled AVG and installed SpybotS&D. It found a few tracking cookies, but nothing else. Wanting to still play I installed Microsoft Security Essentials. It came back with the virus that she said she was seeing and it removed it from the computer. I let it run a few days and it didn't see anything else. I left Security Essentials on it and called and told her Saturday that she could pick it up. She came yesterday and got it. Other than her calling to say she could received her e-mail (she forgot to plug the Ethernet cable in), all is well. Fairly easy way to make $50.
