Switching oil furnace to burn waste oil

I have access to oil furnaces and waste oil. I'd like to make them compatable.

Is it pretty simple?

Can I get something like a Kagi Burner and put it in a regular oil furnace?

I've no idea if it's simple or not, but I know a few places that do it that way. The best is an oil change chain. They burn the used oil from their customers cars. Another is an auto repair shop. He has an older model. It will only burn regular oil. He will not put synthetic in it. Something about it having a higher buring temp that his old furnace can't handle.

Interesting topic. I had looked into waste oil burners a while back, but never thought about trying to convert an conventional oil furnace over to waste oil. It will be intertesting to see what you find out.

I know the nozel sizes would change. You need to be able to regulate the flow also.

ANother concern is what does the good ol insurance company think about your heating unit. (I know you already think this B since you pointed it out to me once) Thanks

I had looked into the Mother Earth unit made from a hot water tank. But decided that it woul be to much of a pain to keep it safe.

The Eliminator sold by Northern Tool looked for the size of my building and needs, but I still do not have the money to budget.

I currently have radiant floor heat through an electric boiler. For me it is tough to invest in another type of heat when this is a new unit. I was looking for a faster heat for the spring and fall months or as a suppliment that would be cheaper to run when I worked in the building during the winter. I have decided that the best thing I can do is invest in more insulation at this point.

Rick,

I assume you need one for your shop and not your house, correct? Waste oil furnaces aren't allowed in houses

Re. Insurance... well, this building doesn't have any so I guess that's not a current concern. But, I think I need to/should check with the Fire Marshall.

I believe we have access to multiple furnaces. If this is "doable", want me to see what it would take to make you one as well?

Brian

PS. I really need to get over to your place to pick up some lighting (if you still have some) and re. using you for snow-plowing, it's obviously not yet needed.

LOL on the plowing.. it is no problem at all I have been very busy with work traveling alot anyway..

Yes I do have plenty of fixtures left over here.

Yes I was speaking of my garage at home for the oil burner.... right now I have put the damper on a different heat source. I really should add insulation to the building first. I know this will cut my bill down a ton.

I may be interested at a later date.. I love the concept though and am interested to see what you find out.

I have a Clean Burn brand waste oil furnace in my garage that works very good. It has to have about 5 psi of compressed air and an oil pre heater to operate. There is also a pump on the tank to pump the oil to the gun. A wast oil furnace has to be cleaned more than a regular oil furnace but it's not a big job to do. There are other brands that may operate different ,and may not need the extra oil pump or compressed air. I am shure a regular furnace can be converted to waste oil with some simple parts and labor.

I have a friend that has a regular oil burner in his garage burning 50% waste oil and 50% Home heating oil. He has about 3 filters to keep the crud from clogging the nozzle or nozzle filter. Has worked well for a number of years. He starts it in straight HHO and then when it is burning, he switches it over. His oil supply is located in the garage, where it stays warmer than if it were outside.
