SW48 Tire pressure

straightarrow

New member
I have an SW48 sidewalk plow (1965) with tube tires 4.50 x 16 6ply. Can anyone tell me what the tire pressure should be. I think the J5 has the same tires. where can I get the tube for said tire?
Thanks
Larry

depending on condition of the tire and rim 90 psi max 70 minimum
a motorcycle tube works good with the metal stem and nut

Thanks for the quick reply. Does it matter if motorcycle tube is center stem or side stem, which is better? What about the ply rating?

For what it is worth, the sticker on the dash of my '68 reads:
"Maintain a strict minimum of 100psi, --maximum 110"

My manual (for J4 and SW) says 100 psi. My tires are far from new and i'm running 90 with no problems (i.e. guides do not appear to be cutting into tires).

Just a word of caution, even though your wheel/tire when new could take 100-110psi use good judgement before you fill that high on a rim that could be 40 or more years old. they do not always take it and can blow apart.

Alpine Guide in Idaho sell the high pressure tubes, with offset stems. They are back ordered on tires four months. the tubes are under 30 dollars each. I’m about to try mini spare tires by Yokohama sized T135/80D-16 at 101 dollars each from Tire Rack, free shipping. I have one on the way and will report my opinion. They are slightly under 25 inches in diameter, six ply and rated at 1900 pounds. They are supposed to be inflated to 60 psi. I may have them foamed by Less Schwab as they are tubeless. If I use tubes I will respect 60 psi. The problem with mini spare tires is most are too large in diameter. These appear to be perfect. The guy on the phone I ordered from was concerned that these are low speed tires until I told him I’m pretty sure I don’t exceed 15 mph. I need six of them so I am going to try this rather than old motorcycle tires. i like the advice here about caution toward air pressure, especially because it could lunch the tires prematurely. If they work I will order six more out of paranoia they will stop production like Goodyear did. Just like almost everything is better today than in 1967, tire technology is superior now to then. 60 psi will work on new tires.
