Summer work on a Br275 tiller. (56k warning)

This discussion started in another thread so I thought I would move over here to keep two discussions seperate.

Last year was my first year in our cat and I wasn't concered about a bend in our tiller. This year I would like to sort it out. I know this is the wrong forum for a late model ski hill cat but I'll post anyways most people here seem friendly. My guess is a bent right side wing but I can't find the actual bend.

I also have another question about the lift ram for the tiller, Check the notes under each picture...

BTW: I know I'm more likely to look at a thread is it has pics,, So, lots of pics...

If you can help I appreciate it, any questions just ask..

Gary

This is the tiller down resting on a log, I would like this to be straight and level.

yep, It`s bent in the air,

This may be a hint the there is a bend in there somewhere.

On to problem number 2.

Whis is this collar welded on here. It prevents the tiller from floating when the front of the cat drops. It is on the rear fram lift ram.

The rest of the pics are just for reference....

Hi, I'm a long time groomer and snowcat machanic. I have lots of expirence with bombardier, camoplast, and prinoth machines. If I can be any help plaease dont hesitate to ask. If I dont know I have friends that do.
Well looking at your setup my first reaction to what i see is where did that tiller come from? Because it dosent look like the original on that came with the machine. The br275 model shown in the photo is a newer generation than the tiller shown.

First I have a question in the picture your lifting frame does not apear to be centered, is it? I have expirenced the limit switch on the tiller causing problems like this before. The tiller eather fails to center or centers off center and when lifte it looks all catywampus.

Second The shocks are to prevent tiller bounce on hard icy snow, on newer machines they are acutaly replaced by a hydraulic ram allowing you to adjust the bend in the tiller. They do go bad but I dont think that that is your problem as one side would sag not the whole tiller.

Finaly I noticed that steel ring on the lift ram. Ive seen rams bend and brake. That dosent look like a repair. It looks like some sort of stop . I would remove it as it serves no function except to screw up yor ram face and seals in the future.

Have you removed the tiller from the cat? Have your serviced the tiller? Pulled the cutter bars out? Generaly the center frame of the tiller will show signs of distortion it is also a good way to see what is straight and what is not. I have seen this occour when one side of the tiller gets snaged. It looks ok but lifts funny.

I also noticed you have a ex winch cat, the steel colar on the lift ram could be their if they frequently winched off roads. The cat would go from a level road to a steep slope lifting the tiller off the surface when going over the breakover. The lift frame cant drop that low as it goes over. I still dont understand why it would be their unlsee the ram has some sort of issue with sticking at the end of its stroke. Measure the ram cylinder and see if it varies in diameter along its length, it could be slightly bulged. Ive seen that sticking occour on wing rams when they are bulged.

Thanks ssisnowpower.

We bought the machine with the passenger box you can see in the background. As it was listed for sale it had no tiller. We arranged for the shop selling it to add a tiller for us before delivery. Any idea how old the tiller is?

You are correct, It is an ex winch cat but I am curious how you knew that.. I guess that just shows I'm talking to someone who knows his stuff..

As far as centering the lift frame, you got me thinkning, the rod that trips the limit switches on the centering ram broke and was re-welded this winter, I thought I had it fixed but your comments made me break out the tape measue and it was out about an inch. It is fixed now, I also cut the collar off the lift ram. I've been wanting to do that for a while I just needed a little push since I didn't know why it was there.

Finally, the tiller only lifts as high as you see it int he pics, it drives me nuts, My best educated guess is that the lift ram was cut so the tiller could not lift up and hit the passenger box when both were installed. Does that sound reasonable or no?

Thanks Again
Gary

BTW: Are you still working in a shop on cats? Looking for a qualified apprentice?

BTW: You mentioned blade wing rams. I now know all about them,, and how important it is to keep those wings out of the rocks... It sure is hard when the trail is only as wide as the cat... BTW: They cost over $800cdn... I mean,, I think....

Glad I could help, the tiller looks like it came from an early year bombardier plus model. '91 - '95 roughly. The tiller has the longer hoses for connection to the cat. The tiller that should be with that cat should have short hoses for connection on your lifting frame. It shouldn't make much of a difference. As for it being a winch cat it has the heavy duty suspension and the mounting points on the frame.

I'm gald to see the collar is gone and it should work out. As for the tiller not lifting they more then likely did that to prevent contact with the cab.
