Stumbled across a Snow-Trac in the woods of Norway

Hi, new member from Norway here so I apologize if my english is bad.

Me and my brother-in-law stumbled across this in the woods while we were at work.

I have not seen one of these before, but my brother-in-law knew what it was and luckily we had a camera with us.

We got ahold of the owner and he told us it is an 1964 model, and he had used it to haul lumber. We made a deal and soon it will be taken home to get stripped down and rebuilt.

It`s been standing for quite some time, and are missing some parts and have some homemade parts, but with some TLC we will hopefully get it back to good condition.

Here are some pictures and please comment or ask if there is something you want to know :thumb:

Welcome,

Enjoy rebuilding the Snow Trac . They are a great snow machine . Is part of the rear door missing?

First, your English is very good!

Second, that has very RARE steel wheels!!! Personally I'd prefer rubber, but I've only seen steel wheels on an early advertisement, never on an actual unit. Very interesting and a good find!

The steel wheels aren`t from the factory unfortunately. The previous owner made them himself, because he had punctured the rubber ones.

Welcome and very good discovery. This, I think, is an early model, note the vents in the bonnet (hood to some of you), later ones had two sets of vents. The windscreen wipers are at the top of the screen, the later ones were fitted at the bottom. The shape of the rear end is early, later the sides were removed and it became square (probably because it would be a real snowtrap and possibly damage the tracks). I see that the original rear light brackets are still in place, with the reflectors still there, the rear lights are obviously missing, but I do know where you can get this, should you want to restore it to originality. The fact that it has three sets of bogie wheels is also a clue to it being an early one (the front set were replaced with a single larger wheel - I believe because they had a habit of driving off the tracks). The headlights seem to be original (and it good condition by the photograph, lucky as they are almost impossible to get now) the indicators also appear to be original. It has the correct metal framed seat for its age too. I don't know whether it is missing its 'sun roof' as I have no knowledge as to whether these were fitted on the early ones, but your roof does not appear to have been tampered with so this may well be original. Hope this helps and good luck.

The engines are usually one year behind the actual year of manufacture, this one has a 1500, 63' engine tag so it's likely a 1964 machine. Also the inverted "Teardrop" side indicators were discontinued around that same time. This machine is worth quite a bit for parts alone. The complete Variator would be worth about 1000$, each of the 4 pulleys on it are about 500$each. The Grousers are about 12$ each (12$X 80Grousers X 2Tracks) and twice that much for the Guides! Interesting 'Home-Made' steel wheels. I wouldn't recomend using them as they would wear out your guides and grousers. Quite a "Find". Good detective work. :tiphat:

Thanks Ice Queen and Lyndon, theres some really good info there.

Yeah we will post lots of pics when we get it home and start tearing it apart :)

good find well done!

It looks to be in great condition considering it is outside.

have a look at www.ebay.de search words 'hella oldtimer' if you want to find some rear lights for it

good luck!
