ST4 Engine Seized...Suggestions?

schmidt

Member
Our beloved 1965 ST4 lost its original engine, VW Commercial. Not sure exactly what has failed, but it appears to fatal.

Any suggestions:

Best to replace the entire engine?

If replacing the engine, what type should go in?

Larger / more power?

Cooling an issue?

I am located in Washington state.

Appreciate any suggestions. Thank You

i'm upgrading mine to a 1600. The one I'm removing looks the same size as yours .it is still strong and no problems. I just want more power.
to bad your not close.
I think I emailed you during our jamboree.

Thanks Jim for the message. Do you know if the 1600 has to be modified to go in? I understand the original engine is a commercial / bus engine. I wonder how important that is when it comes to replacing? Appreciate your thoughts. Brad

Sorry Jim you are going to love me for this but my suggestion would be to now upgrade to a 1600. the older engines are hard to get parts for and when you find them they are expensive.

the fan tin may come off my 1200 for the 1600 anyway. I still haven't figured out what way I am going with the oil cooler.

My $.02 (I purchased a terminal powered ST a few years back)
OEM
I removed my industrial single port engine and sourced a (craigslist) donor motor.

I found the tin and oil cooler items unique to the industrial fit right onto the 1600 cc dual port donor motor. It took a couple of phone calls to members for advice and encouragment but the work was straight forward.

I recommend staying air cooled. and adding a bit of HP through reliable well supported automobile aftermarket items.

If I were to go hybrid.

Diesel is where I would head. (fuel and battery to the rear most position)
Big wheel modification to the front Walking beam.
Larger output sprockets. to get the ratio of the OEM option. 2.54 final.

BTW nice looking machine what number I am #268

May not be your engine. Looks like someone stole your front sprockets. :) sorry for your loss. Curious to see what you change it out with.

matt kensrude has a good shop in town and he would be a good person to get with if you need the work done. he is a member of our group and your local snowmobile president.

I got him hooked up just ordered the parts yesterday in the end he will wind up with a new motor with a reconditioned block new altered heater boxes and reconditioned tin ready to install I currently have 2 to rebuild hoping to be doing assembly by next weekend. may get one of the kids to photo graph and put it up here if I have the time

I have that low hour engine I plan on installing. what are you doing with that large oil cooler?

Schmidt your engine number will be ae 168121 I'm going to have to do some research on it I believe it may be an industrial motor as there should be 7 digits behind the ae not 6 but it is a dual pressure relief dual port motor case looks good and I will have to upgrade to 8 mm studs with case savers. I should be blasting tomorrow once I get the 3 rd engine stripped that way I can send 3 cases in for line bore. Iditarod starts next week and my guides should be in in the morning I need the tracks back on the Thiokol before it gets blown in in a storm and I cant move it I may have to take a little time out to get it done. Jim are you in need of a dog house cooler I'm going to build his with a new stick cooler and a single port fan housing so he has no need to alter the intake scoop.by the way when I rebuild a motor I prefer to use new oil coolers that way there is no chance of running crap through new oil pumps and bearings.

Thanks Don for the update. I have the new 200mm clutch, 12 volt starter, and bushing in hand. Look forward to further updates and I'll keep my local mechanic up to speed on your progress. Thanks too, for everyone who has responded and I'll be sure to post pics when the new engine is in. Brad
