ST4 coil springs

Since the coil springs on my st4 are 48 years old will they still have the spring in them that is necessary to keep the front set of wheels down. When I bought this project it had solid wheels and the front small tires had grooves in them from the track drive sprockets digging into them. Can these springs be so weak that it allows the front set of boggies to go that far forward or was there some other adjustment that was out of wack. Any ideas on this would be helpful especially it you have seen or experienced this. I thought I heard somewhere that coil springs can be resprung ( if that is the correct word) any ideas on this process or if it possible. I remember back in the day that some people would put shims in the coils to stiffen them up is this still done and can it work for this?

here are some photos where you can see the tire damage and the springs themselves. When I took the tracks off I could swing the front set of wheels and they would reach far enough forward to touch the sprockets or I should say would have touched the sprockets if the tires were not already grooved out. Would this indicate the chains being to short - I have new tires and I don't what them to be touched by the drive sprockets

If your chain tension is correct, it appears the chains are too short. You should have inches of clearance between the first boggie wheel and the drive gear.

That was my first thought. I think when I reassemble I will swing the first set of wheels as far forward as I can without the coil springs and shock in place then set the drive sprocket with a couple of inches of clearance. Then I will put the chains on and see if they are to short.

Then that brings up another question. Are the chains a weird size for getting extra links?

Thanks couchloafer for the imput.
Didn't you score some sets of drive sprockets a while back or was I thinking of someone else?

Snow-Trac final drive chain is metic ISO 16B-1 (25.4 x 17mm). Don't try and substitute an ANSI #80 chain as it is slightly too narrow and will chip the sprockets over time.

I have had a few travel through. Best bet I have found is the foundry in North Pole Alaska....

Thanks couchloafer. I knew about the foundry was just wondering if there are some sets already to go before I would have to order some. I need a set for both sides. If I could get one set (or both) for a little less money it would help.
Again thanks,

Dawg do you know somewhere local I can get them(links)
I got the new tires all mounted up and my belting all punched and ready to put together.

Where did you get your belting? and what are you using? I need to order up some belting but have not made up my mind what to use yet.
