ST4 58031 rebuild & repair

I have started repair of my ST4 that I inherited from my dad. I have run into a few issues that I hope someone out there can help me with. I knew I had a bearing problem within the track sprocket 'swing arm' (referred to in the parts manual as the front axle bearing cup). After removing the tracks and the track drive sprockets I found things a lot worse than expected. The front axle bearing cup on the drivers side is in very bad shape.

Are there any of these front axle bearing cups out there or should I consider rebuilding these at a machine shop?

Next issue is getting the bearing cup off the machine. The drift pin that attaches the drive chain adjustment arm to the bearing cup is too long to remove by driving it toward the inside (toward engine compartment). Is there a preferred method for removing this pin?

And lastly for this post....the bottom shaft/pin that the bearing cup is mounted to on the passenger side...it appears the sleeve that pin fits in (attached to the frame) must have needed repair in the past. Unfortunately whoever made the repair seems to have welded the sleeve while the pin was inside. I may have to cut that sleeve off with the pin inside. Unless some has a less destructive idea!
I am open for suggestions!

Hi Gasman, There is a Snow Trac club out of Pamer that would be a great resource and the guys there should help you source the bearing parts you need. Link below has there contact info. I live up in Talkeetna and have a Bombardier J5 but looking into buying a Snow Trac for the winter. Look into forum user Lyndon, he had about 100 snow trac's that he rebuilt and there is hundreds of forum pages.

A machine shop should be able to TIG weld up the area the axle shaft wore into. Then chuck in a large enough lathe to bore it back to size. The outer race of the bearing I am guessing broke into pieces that are no longer there..

Might even be able to set the bearing in with some of the good epoxy's out there, JB weld being a foavorite. I have seen this work on some thing similar. In the cold this stuff is even harder to. Some folks laugh at it, but none the less it has been used succcesfully in some places that make you shake your head...

Not sure about your other issue. Would have to go and look at mine...

I appreciate the welding tip, but if you look closely there is more of a problem. The outer end of the bearing cup is about 1-1/2" 'shorter' than it should be! That part of the bearing cup that actually holds the bearing is completely worn away. Yes I had most of those pieces fall out when I removed the sprocket.

Hence my question if anyone has a front axle bearing cup for sale. I would estimate that purchasing one may still be less expensive that rebuilding this one.

Thanks

I have seen these built up on Schedule 80 Steel pipe as well. Bore to fit the bearings, and weld on the tabs for mouting it. Qute a few have been done that way as well.

But hey if you can get a new one, that's what I would try first.

Regards, Kirk
