ST 4 TYPE 1 NOSE CONE ON TRANNY

Hi, I bought a project that came with a new tranny i installed engine/tranny then tried to install shifter but it would not fit after calling a vw trans guy he said that if it should have been a type 2 that the shaft is actually lower. Which means i now need to pull motor/tranny and change to type 2 nose cone 61-67 or maybe get trackmaster style shifter or make new box to mount shifter any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Terry.
 
I think parts from a vw shifter kit will work but I am not sure .Did you read it's a suprise?
 
i did the same thing with mine because the type 1 shifter assy on my new transmission had a seal on it what i did was use a 3/8 piece of aluminum plate and cut a larger hole in the top of the dog house than attached the shifter in the proper position if you want i can get you some pics as my rig is in the shop this weekend

i just built a spacer to lift the shifter up a bit when i replaced the trans as the type one shaft had a seal on it i wanted to use it to better seal the trans while crossing water the type 1 cone will require the shifter to be raised a little and moved over to the drivers side a bit, if i remember right i think i documented it when i did the thread on changing the transmission i also cut out the wood flooring under the unnel cover so i could see just where things needed to be positioned
