springs on j5

Ok... not sure what happened to my previous response but it is gone...
anyway, here i go again. Looks like you are a welder, so cut the J5 spring can open measure the spring and provide them to http://www.acewirespring.com/rfq-coil.html in Pittsburgh and see what the spring costs.
I purchased a rebuild from MN-Outdoors (15" bolt center to center) it was 1" shorter than normal, when installed, the J5 is 5" higher in front than the back and one side is higher that the other. I have 3 J5's all have 16" bolt centers on the spring cans. Soooo even with the bolts attached to the foremost points on the walker beam (there are two points on all my machines) I cannot seem to adjust the nose down to level. so I think the 1" shorter spring can must be compressed into the shorter spring can then welded.

I do need to talk to MN-Outdoors to see what they think. I do want to say that the quality of the remanufactured spring can is very good, just 1" short.:wow:

Blah blah... anyway be careful when you change out the spring, something to watch for.

It would be nice to see an automotive coil number that matched a J5 spring measurements. Its probably belongs on some 1930's Plymouth car Mr Bombardier used for parts.
Pretty hard to get an even ride height with just one new can and not the same length. Old cans need to be opened up, springs compared, make sure both have the internal stops. Link holes determine ride and track tension ride height. After all that they can still sit weird,[once had a twisted hull on a J5 }. After 50 years , the saying "only driven by an old lady to church doesn't apply". Just my opinion. J5 Bombardier :hammer:

You were as quick as the Easter bunny on this one!
Can we get more info on the springs. If possible did you take any pic's?

Yes the J5 only has springs on the front... but the ones you got from the Ranger... are they from the front or back and what year is the Ranger... maybe all years are the same. Most important is you are pleased with them and I would really like to know so I can get two to build a standard set from my machine.
Thanks

i got them from the front and the ranger was a 1995 yes i am very pleased with them. the springs are stiffer also and are 14 inches long....best of luck with yours.
