Solving drainage issues

2 different situations.

1 brother has a house on a 3/4 acre lot that's pretty well graded on 3 sides, but his side yard acts as a pool. We really don't want to change the grade as it might generate more water runoff into neighbor's yard. We want to create an easy place for the water to run away from the house.

Another brother's house is on a tiny (40 x 140) lot. There are driveways\sidewalks abutting the house on both sides. Water collects in the back yard and eventually finds its way into the basement. If we could, again, create an easy place for the water to flow to, we could then tie that into a down spout to take the water out to the storm drain under the street.

I've found that renting mini-excavators is one of the most fun things a grown man can do (other than owning one). Rent a little excavator and start digging. You'd be amazed what those little guys can do.

Oh yeah, call before you dig, etc. etc. etc.

Dig a hole and take 2 five gal. buckets and cut the bottom out of both. Stack the buckets together and drill a bunch of 3/8 diameter holes in the sides. put 6 inches of gravel in the bottom and surround the buckets in the hole with gravel. Use a submersible sump pump and pump it under the sod to the spout drain. Make sure you run it off a gfci outlet to power the pump.
