SNOWTRAC STARTER ISSUES

How difficult and hard is, to remove and replace the Starter Bosch on the ST4.
I didn't do it when it was easy, with the engine not mounted on the chassis (as LYNDONS says).

If I have to remove only the engine panel, with the Variator mechanism on, How easy will it be?
Im thinking to rebuilt it.

I need your opinion.

By the Way three weeks ago i replace the exhust pipe with a new one

Well its in the "eye of the Beholder". As I recall the belt does not have to be removed. Here are a couple pics using a mirror to look back into the bell housing to see the brass bushing. Its important to check this and likely change it. For me this was the toughest part. Getting the old cleanly out and replacing it with a new one. Likely the new starter will have one. You'll see on the old the starter that one of the bolting tabs has been trimmed back in order to fit. You'll likely need to do this for the new one. FYI, removing the belt and the fly wheel is not that difficult, dirty yes, but not hard. If you are removing the drive disk or disks and belt. Consider changing gear oil at this time. The passenger side drive tower is removed by just three bolts, take off the grease hose and slides up and off. This gives you easy access to pour new gear oil in, MUCH easier then from the filling hole and you can put more in. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the replay. I appreciate it.
I am thinking all the time how to fix it, and when the time comes, i will do it.
The most toughest part, i think is to remove and replace the brass bushing with the new one, from the backside of the transmition. My plane is not to remove and seperate the engine from the bell housing. (If i have to rebuilt the same starter ).
The High Torgue Starter as Vintagebike Says is the back plan on.

The next days i will remove for another time the exhaust pipe, and working under the Belly panel
The 2nd foto is the one with the brass bushing,

Keep on Working

I put the auto starters in, they don't use a bushing. My only recomendation is to old take start loose. slide it out, turn it around and remove the wiring.

fish it out of its nest.

cut or trim tab to match

fish in the new starter,

Wire it

turn it around down there and slide it in.

install bolts

I'm in the process to pull out the pulley (upper an lower) but i am stuck on the screws 13- 14- 15 on the bracket, those in the red circle . Over tightness screws. The others in the orange are ok.

Also i have an extra problem with the lower screw on the starter (the one in the mirror). I can't loosen it. There is no space. I wiil try from another direction.
Keep Working

The auto electrician the noticed the starter failure was in the carbon brush and the carbon spring.
The armature its ok
The field coil exitation its ok
The pole shoe

The electrician told me that it is was not necessary to buy a new starter, because his service will last for years.

We'll see....

I applaud your efforts. I was able to do the swap with out removing all the variator components. You are confident.

great job.

good job, and those screws needed freeing up anyway. also good time to inspect the bearings on the variator.
I need to have a meeting with my "team" to decide how to revove the mechanics parts on the variator, (the axles and the ball bearings).
Its not easy. I never done before.
Any ideas.

Unless they feel sloppy, I wouldn't do that breakdown. I was referring to 54, 56 and the other side variator bearing. I have pulled both axles of mine to replace the seal 15 and gasket 4 it is not hard, but I don't think it is worth it unless you need to. The gasket 4 has an effect on the mesh of the gears 3,32 and either you need to use identical thickness or make a gage to test fitting.

First of all, I will clean all the metal surfaces from oils & grease, and some of the pieces of the rubber belt. Then I will reinforce the wire at the point of contact with the starter.
I will also change the oil in the gearbox.
The ball bearings 54 & 56 are new. I replaced them last year. The 45 ball bearings in both side are often greased. I don't know the condition of the 33 inside the axles......but i am not so curious.
Step by Step.

It's good to know an auto electrician.
An Auto Electrician with skills, and the ability to diagnose with electrical equipment the failure and of course to know the way and the method to solve the problem.
