Snowball Puff is a stinky dog

Just to put this in perspective, I've been a dog owner my whole life. Grew up with them. Have typically had 2 in the house for the 20+ years of my marriage. We have 4 in the house now.

But ONE of those dogs STINKS. All get the same food. All get the same treats. So I don't think its a food issue.

So why is it that the little 6 pound Maltese has an odor about him that will make your eyes tear and your nose close up in disgust when the 100# dog just smells, well, like a dog?

He can get to other places a larger dog can't. He may have a honey hole he's rolling in regularly!

He CAN get into places the other dogs can't get into but honestly I don't see it as an issue. The dog goes outside only for short periods, is never really left outside. He just smells. Like doggy B.O.

If we give him a bath the smell goes away for a few days but then gradually it comes back. Its always the same smell.

I don't understand it.

Deodorant, they have it for dogs! .......

2 possibilities - brush his teeth or take him in for a doggie dental check, or try changing him to a different dog food. (especially avoid canned food) How old is he, and have the other dogs started acting different around him, or has he always been this way?

He gets dry food. Purina Beniful. Its not his breath that stinks. Its the whole damn dog! 6# of fluffy stank.

Both my dogs smell different. They eat the same food. I suspect it is just something to do with the breed and the oils they secrete.

At least you only have to wash a 6# dog. That's a quick dunk in the sink.

I once adopted a schnauzer that had a stinky problem, and was the first and only dog I ever owned to have such problem.
Impacted anal glands.
Smelled like a can of sardines when they'd decide to empty on their own..
The boys used to say "Mommmmmmmm Trixie's got fish butt again"
The vet instructed me on how to empty the glands for her manually.

Anal sacs are nasty. My Spaniel/Fox Hound cross needs hers emptied every few weeks. I hate that job.

Here Bob, instructions for you. Make sure to video tape it for us.

My sister has what we think is a Jack/Dalmation/Brittany Spaniel mix.
He just plain smells like something.
The odor leaves for a few days after he's bathed, then comes right back.
The only way I can describe it, is like fresh blood, more noticeable when he's been outside in the fresh air.
It's coming from his skin.
Hairy or rough coated dogs tend to have more of a natural strong smell to them anyway, I think.

Nope, I'm well aware of anal glands (and willingly pay someone else to deal with it) but that is NOT Snowball's problem. Its more like body odor.

try changing him to Iams, Eukanuba, or Science Diet and see if that takes care of the smell. Sometimes it's a case of changing the diet. The other thing I would suggest if you weren't this close to winter would be to shave him and see if there's any underlying skin condition hidden by the fur.

I have given thought to changing his diet to see if that has an effect.

The shaving him thing is not an issue, his fur is kept in a "puppy cut" and he gets trimmed down pretty regularly. No skin issues. We've checked.

I had a little Maltese once, he was brilliant, and he didn't smell at all, so I don't think it is the breed. Has the vet any suggestions?

Re-reading my post, I think I had better make it clear that I am refering to a Maltese dog before someone makes any comments!! I may have dug myself a bigger hole with that comment too, so I think I'll shut up.
