Snow Track, Automatic trans?

Just want to ask, though it might be a dumb question:

-Is it possible to use the VW automatic transmission in a Snowtrack?

In theory, if you could find one that matches up properly, YES.

Not sure if you'd have to change the gearing???

Another Snowtrack owner on this forum changed the "final gearing", the driving sprocket. That could be done in this case as well?

There is no reason the gearing couldn't be changed.

There is no reason the auto-transmission couldn't be installed.

Its all theoretically possible, I simply know of no case where/when it was done. It may take modification to the firewall and engine compartment.

I have no idea what the physical dimensions are of the old auto-transmissions and how that compares to the manual transmission's physical size. If they are close then the job may not be too difficult. Not sure about where/how to mount a gear selector with an auto-trans. Not sure about the actual capabilities of the auto-trans and how it would hold up.

I think the reason that no one that is on this forum has so equipted one is that the VW auto back in the day wasn't a very good transmission. Auto's of that vintage rob horse power, and in a snow trac this is usually not a welcome thing...No locking torque converter, so top speeds would be converter slip limited...Not to mention parts and service for them would be harder as well.

Not saying it cann't be done, just would have some serious drawbacks IMHO..

after driving a VW auto in the 70's I think it would be a bad idea. Very slow pickup speed when in auto mode. You should drive one in a car first.
