Snow Trac ?

Looking into a ST4, Got a question about the wheels seems like there is a large wheel version and a small one. Always described it seems as early and late. Any idea as to what year the change occurred? Is one system "better" than the other? or is it just a bean counter change:w00t2:

it was around 1970 the track systems started to change on the early models the drive sprockets were closer to gether the track system worked great it was almost impossable to walk out of a track the big wheel models were supposed to corect some of the shortcommings of the early model as #2 road wheel failures by using a larger wheel and putting a rubber band under the wheels to protect the tiers they created another problem with snow and ice build up in the wheel guide aera the t band tracks had taller guides but were spread out farther which caused detracking when the track was twisted in terrain and the new style grousers used on t band track machiens wern't as tough as the the older grousers on the plus side the 3 band track sprokets were much beefyer and the three band models had larger motors i have seen some big wheel models with 2 band tracks i think this might have happened in the transition years niether system is perfect but my vote goes to 2 band tracks.

what do you want to pay i know of one localy needs new rubber on the tracks because his belts were punched wrong other wise it looks pretty nice

Thanks dds, for taking the time to share your knowledge

As to the "local" snow trac. local to you or me? your tag says you are in Nome. I was there about 3 years ago, I believe that in relation to Nome nothing is really local. But the transport of the unit back here to the 'Land-O-Cheese" might prove very costly.

Going to look at a Tucker 542 today, in upper Michigan. Waiting to here back on the ST4,

it's local to me if i could fit it on a dc6 it would cost about 600 bucks to get it to anchorage than what ever the cost is to truck it to seattle my thaughts is it's priced a little steep considering it needs new tracks.

Can anyone give me a ballpark on redoing a set of ST4 tracks, can figure most of the rest but have no idea about the tracks. I found out today that the ST I am "looking" into has been sitting outside in a field for 20 years with no glass, no top hatch. so I am guessing it is pretty much a total rehab. I need idea on track cost to make an offer. I have never done tracks. The snowtrac is only 1800 miles from me so it is pretty much a sight unseen kind of deal.

here is one here that is for sale up here looks like it has a 1600 with alternator conversion also has an oil cooler set up as an aux heater ans remote filter set up on it just needs new rubber on the tracks they were punched wrong

it's a spare i'm going to try to haggle him out of it that don't need to leave town wished he had a couple of spare sprokets

It looks much better than what I am expecting the pics of the ST I am considering. Just with Nome to Milwaukee shipping cost I would have to get it at a really nice price, read that as probably ridiculously cheap

the owner is wanting 6 k for it but because of the tracks he is willing to negoigiate getting it to anchorage on everts would be around 600 bucks on the back haul rate but i don't know what truck shipping would be yes teledawg that is why i shot a picture of it i like the oil heater install don't need it when the jbox heaters work right gets you plenty hot.

Were the track belts punched with the wrong pitch?[/QUOTE yes when he got the vehicle it came with a new set of pre punched belts so he re belted it with about 50 pounds of new nuts and bolts after throwing the track on he found he had to remove every 3rd grouser just to be able to move it around his yard.

This is just what I am looking for, all the mods I am considering are there! I talked to several transport companies today, best quote I have gotten for Anchorage to Milwaukee is 4800.

I would be having a serious talk to who ever punched those belts for me!

Still waiting on some quotes. however leaving town for 10 days tommorrow, no computer access, no phone, no electric, it will be great!

if you like it i will contact everts air cargo and get a firm pice on it back haul is pretty cheap and i will pm you rogers phone number the guy who rebuilt it is bob haffnerhe has a picture of one he rebuilt on chris morlands site sitting in front of safety road house.i don't know who punched the belts i think that happened after bob sold it.

I think that is the same ST4, No. 264. The picture from Christer's site has that reverse hood scoop and the external tank on the right rear and the top mounted spot-light. LINK

Can you confirm the serial number?

i will talk to bob about it but i think you are right bob has done a couple of them and his current one is in a jillion pieces right now the reverse hood scoop was popular up here when cutting snow drifts keeps the snow out of the intake duct and getting redeposited on the windshield on the inside mine had one to but i removed it as it was hard to see over

talked to haffner tonight while picking up a pizza and you are right that is 264 how ever the sn data plate is missing just a little history. so you know it has made at leaste one trip totaling 40 miles

$4800 seems a little high to me as that is what i would expect to pay to ship it to Alaska not the other way around. Try Minn-Alaska Transport at (907) 746-3950 or NorthLand Services at 800-426-3113. Northland does just the barging from Anchorage to Seattle but I shipped a Thiokol Spryte with a Tour cab and blade a few years ago with them and it was only $1000.
