Snow Trac snow deflectors

Here's a couple of pics of the snow deflectors I made for my snow trac. After reading Lyndon's tales of snow buildup on the tracks followed by cracking of the front axle housing because deflectors were absent, I figured it was high time I put some on.

I had some polyethylene sheet stock laying around the shop, figured it would work ok. Seems just fine. Should the deflectors extend further back toward the rear tire? If so, I can add some rubber flaps. See all the snow stuck to the u/c? That's what happens when you take a snowcat from a nice warm shop and swim it through deep powder.:pat:

Here's a closeup of some other ones on a Trac Master. Not sure if they are "stock" though.

Your's look pretty close.
 
Thanks PB. From what I can see from the old parts manual, your deflectors look original or at least close to it. Villi posted these pics of the early design rubber deflectors, and the newer metal ones:

It's possible that my machine never had the deflectors. Ice Queen posted pics of some military snow tracs on the docks in Narvik, Norway. She discovered that, through the serial # of my ST4, that it was built in the same production run as these. Note the absence of the snow deflectors:

Here is a pic. of the snow deflectors in action.

as you can see there is a ton of snow thrown out of the rotating trac if it were left in there it would definantly build up, and SNAP, from here on out it would be no fun..... and very expensive.....

It's about time you showed up here with a picture of #163... :whistling: (jk)

That really does show the shower of snow that gets dumped back into the tracks. About how fast were you going when that shot was taken?

Ps. How about some more pics of #163 in action? :clap:
 
That was third gear maybe 15 mph, not too fast, and the snow was very wet and heavy, so I was suprised to see that much snow movement.
 
Thought I'd post a pic of 163 climbing out from the Lake..... Very Steep, but it walked right up it.:w00t2:

nice looking old snow trac i got a little more history on my rig it seems it belonged to a guy wales who sold it to another person in teller who has since passed away and now i have it . with usaf markings under the hood i would guess the airforce brought it out here in support of the dew line do you have any history on 163
 
If I understand Correctly it was purchased new by a fellow in Cooper Landing, then went up to Girdwood then Teledawg and now me, Teledawg did quite a bit of work to it before I purchased it from him, re belted the trac's and other things, it is in very good shape considering it is 50 years old, it's amazing they are still around, but I guess it's like my old 49 Ford 8-N with a little TLC, and some enginuity they will last forever.

Teledawg if I have left something out or mis stated anything feel free to correct me.

that explanes his interest in the machine i didn't recognise it with the exhaust stack teladawg did an awsom job on that unit you should get many years of use out of itthe only thing i can say don't be afraid of the greese gun
