I made a firewalll for lack of a better term, as I see in the parts list for them. Mine as so many others lacks the forward tin work that was in front of the engine. Evidently for winter use it is deemed not really nessary by most owners, therefore most have had it removed. It is my belief that keeping the engine cool was not the only goal that was in mind. I think keeping underhood temps down was also very much kept in mind, especially if the machine ended up in south Texas instead of Canada.....
The way they were attempting to do this was to segragate the hot air from cooling the engine by making as much of it as possible go through the grill under the bumper. There is a piece that is supposed to fill in the gap from the grill to the rear edge of the bumper that is also missing on mine. I believe this was there to make the warm air exit underneath of the bumper, that much farther from the upper grill that was to let cool air into the engine compartment, keeping under hood temps down. The hollow channel of the bumper would also diffuse the heat along it, perhaps melting the snow that tends to build up on top of it. The front fire wall also served to prevent wind blown snow from getting the ignition wet, causing engine stalls......
I made a fire wall up from aluminum, but left a gap unfortunately above the muffler. Lots of heat is exiting through this gap when the hood is lifted after a run. By filling this as well as the filler behingd the bumper, I am quite sure under hood temps would subside. My engine runs cool without it, but I am after keeping the variator cool as well as closer to original apearance....
Was wondering if any memers here own an ST with it's orginal in front of the engine tin.... And wonder if they notice what I am talking about, heat from under the bumper, cool in the top side of the grill.....
A pic of what I made......
Mine bolts directly to the rear of the engine tub. Orignals had three fill pieces between the engine and firewall, in the parts pics I have. I suppose this is why they don't have the gap above the muffler. Mine has the 4 large hole under the muffler drilled as well....By filling the gap I have I will accomplish the same thing as original I am thinking.....
So any body have pics of an original engine compartment? Or comments about what I am thinking as well...
Thanks
Regards, Kirk
