Translation of snowtrac59 posts

"Hello everyone who likes snowcats, I just bought an old snow-trac 58 completely original with the old tracks. But the canvas top is gone, so if there is anyone who knows where to find a drawing or similar to copy a new one?"

Add some photos of the machine as well. Model year -58, manufacturing number 15.

I think Ice Queen has made a new one for hers and has a template to lay it out with.

Couchloafer probably has them as well....

Has this snow trac got steel wheels? I know some of the early versions were very different than the later models.

It looks to be a one piece track as well! Kool!

thank you mack E and Bobcat for translations .very interesting snow trac. glad mine has not got so many wheel bearing .making a new canvas for mine at the moment. I will post sizes and pics too make .will fit but not as factory as on original to copy.I am the cutter in a sewing works.

The driver cogs are inside the front hub, and the wheel guilds are inside the steel wheels. Gotta wonder if they went away from this, as snow would pack into the wheel guides and the drives would slip or spin on the built up snow? Just guessing. Lots of rare parts on this one....parts that would be hard to find!

Regards, Kirk

yes that is quite a find and now i believe the oldest snow trac still running i bet you will never see a krusty that old still running

Here are some pictures of such a suspension. These are from another Snow-Trac.

My guess is it was an unsucessfull attemp, and was changed to not only simplfy production, but imporve the design as well. 11 Bogies wheels is well, unnessary, and I might add wouldn't ride as well with all that track support. Not sure I understand yet the cantilever set up for the springs to all those little wheels. check out the spring set up on the rear idler, very interesting. Wonder why this part was dropped....But I can see how snow could pack this setup full of snow/ice mix. My guess this is only one of the reason for the change. Simplification, and lower cost combined with better performance would have made this a no brainer. Wish we could talk to those guys who desiged this set up to know for sure. The one plus to this however is never any flat tires!

Here is some pictures from snowtrac59 on the number 15 machine.

thats neet looks like my thaughts were right in that the rear ideler wheel origionated from motorcycles you can clearly see the swing arm and motor cycle type drum brakes on that early model

Good point dds,

Also notice the track center drive band and how it is driven buy the front pulley, instead of sprockets driving aginst the grouser bars. Any bets on how well it drove the tracks? I was thinking on the other one, maybe the center drive band in the track was notched for a bar inside of the driver pully. Nope, just serations inside of the pully tograb the tapered sides of the drive band. These track rubber parts would have been unique, and thankfully they changed them later, or today replacments would be MUCH harder to find. As it is on the later machines, the steel parts and some grain leg belting is all you need to replace, and freshen up the tracks. I'd have to say they did the right things on the later machines. But this one is pretty cool in that is shows the development of the track system.

It is probably a good thing it is located in Sweden, as I bet the parts are still hard to find, but MUCH easier there than anywhere else on the globe, I bet..
