Snake Oil?

A co-worker sent this to me.....I say it's complete snake oil, but I want to know if anyone has heard of it before.

The web site claims $0.46 per gallon for alternative diesel fuel. I told my co-worker that if he can manufacture his first 1000 gallons at less than $0.75 per gallon, I would buy all 1000 gallons from him for $1.50 per gallon, plus pay him double what he bought the "secret" for.

Looks like someone is marketing SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil):

Perhaps they have some additive that prevents it from solidifying and gumming up your injectors.

SVO kits have been around for a while. You may be able to buy waste oil from a local renderer (the guys that pick up used oil from restaurants). Basically, all you have to do is filter it and then pre-heat it and it will work fine in your engine. Typically, you get a switch so you can purge the SVO from your engine before you shut it down (no clogged fuel lines).

Your labor and material costs to gather the oil, filter it, add additives (snake oil) and store it for use will only amount to about $4.00 per gallon. Now you may save .10 per gallon versus buying diesel but the cost of repairs to your vehicle running this crap will cost a lot more in the end. It will work in some multi fuel engines ok but the modern diesel used in our vehicles may and most likely reject it quickly.

But-- I alway thought that something like this could be possible. Just imagine if it did work. Not for the personal Asian restaurant grease-gatherer, but on a large scale.

It does work but the costs to develop the process, grow, refine the product for fuel use and to bring it to market are higher than what the public is willing to pay at this point in time. Someday it will happen. It will be a viable alternative but the big oil companies will be doing the tech research and development to get us there and then probably control the market and prices. It is just too costly for the small fry to do on there own......
