Smoking in public places to be banned in England summer 2007

Probably is a good thing, but I'd vote against it. I don't smoke, but will admit on rare occasion, a good cigar goes well with a few beers.

edit: How do they enforce it in "private" clubs; unless they're not really private?

Our town has gone to it in all restaurants. If you serve more then 70% alcohol you can have smoking. A lot of people were pissed but it didn't hurt sales at all.

Now interesting, but two bars full liquor bars have banned smoking. So what happened to sales, they went up drastically. So it was a good choice for them. I am sure all the people that liked to drink but hated the smoke in a bar just started going there, all bars probably could not get away with it.

Vin, I have to agree with you. My step mother is what I consider a considerate smoker; she smokes but does not force others to breathe her smoke. I have zero problem with that. At a restaurant she can step outside to grab a smoke and rejoin dinner. If I prefer to not smoke at a restaurant that allows smoking, I have no choice. I breathe the smoke, my clothes, hair and skin are saturated with smoke and my kids are forced to do the same. Cigarette smoke also gives me very bad headaches. So, I am part of the growing number of people who will not force their children to smoke, and since I don't care to have pounding headaches, so I will not patronize those places. When smoking is allowed in certain venues that I must attend, I am forced against my will to smoke.

About half of my employees smoke. They know I don't have an issue with them smoking, but they also know that I rather strongly prefer to not smoke with them. I have a sand bucket type of receptical outside for butts and most all are considerate enough to use that as well rather than use my sidewalk or lawn. It still kills me to see a visitor or customer come up while smoking, look right at the "Smoker's Outpost" (as it is called) and then fling their butt in my lawn.

Anyway, I agree with the ban in public places for those reasons; not because I feel that I should tell someone whether they should smoke or not. Local bars and restaurants that were first afraid to go smoke free because smoking groups told them that their establishment would go broke have pleasantly found they have more business and even their smoking patrons have returned. Heck, just ask my step mom, it seems to be a 'buddy - buddy' thing for the smokers to step out for a smoke and chat.

Although in general I disagree with goverment passing laws like this I do agree with pretty much all of the anti-smoking laws that have been passed. I have noticed since I was young teenager that smokers in general are pretty ignorant of the effect of their habit on the people around them - maybe this is spite - but if it takes laws to hammer that point home then so be it.

If you like annoying smoker stories you will like this one:

Back in my 20's while I was in college I took a trip into the city for some research. This was in the mid 80's when a lot of the smoking laws still hadn't been passed but the attitude of people was definitely changing against it. I took the subway in and since it was around morning rush hour time the cars were pretty packed with people standing up. Well this guy started smoking in the crowd - he stood there smoking and it was bothering me but I didn't say anything - I could see other people in the crowd getting agitated and I figured somebody else would speak up. Finally a woman asked him politely if he would put out his cigarette because the smoke was bothering her - the smoker guy got pretty snippy with her and started talking about how it is his right to smoke anywhere he wants to , you can't tell me what to do, I like smoking so I don't care what you think, etc. etc. The woman backed down and started trying to move away from him but couldn't really because the subway car was pretty packed. By this time he had been smoking for a few minutes and the smoke was really starting to bother me - and the little incident with the woman I think finally set me off. So I asked him in a reasonably measured voice:

Excuse me sir - do you think it would be ok if I whipped my penis out right here on the subway car and started jerking off - I am sort of stressed right now and I need a little pick me up.

Smoker: are you crazy or something? Thats gross - you can't do that sort of stuff in public - nobody wants to see that.

Me: so you are basically telling me that I can't just do anything I want in a public place when other people might not like it?

Smoker: ( I think he was catching on ) Uh - Yeah.

Me: ( with a bit of an angry look on my face) Good - then you and I agree - Now put out your fu*&%in cigarette like the nice woman asked you to.

I think he got the point. :D
