I learned early on to acknowledge every passerby with a 'Hi', a 'Hello' or a 'It's a beautiful day", whether the person is young, old, ugly or in between. Everyone. As a mid-westerner, you wave or raise a hand or to every oncoming driver on those long country roads. It's just something you do.
Sometimes the other person seems startled by a 'Hi', but most meet eyes with a smile.
