Slave Lake, Alberta

Apparently the schools, hospital, malls, allot of houses....all burnt to the ground. From what I've heard, it's not over yet. The fires are still burning.

Yes, I heard about that terrible event. My thoughts go out to all who have been affected by the tragedy.

I am awe struck; how that fire is so big in the winter. I am in N California; we get bad wildfires here. But right now there is no way you could get a fire going as damp as things are in spring time. I would have expected high fuel moisture and damp conditions there too.

I have been to Banff and Calgary; Slave Lake is way north.

Thoughts and prayers to residents, and all the firefighters on the front lines

Ummm....it's not winter anymore. Spring time usually brings some dry conditions depending on how the snow melts. If it evaporates and there's no rain, it gets dry quick. If they have had the amount of rain that we have this spring, I can see how it would get pretty dry. We haven't had much for rain. It's been warm and windy here for the past week which will raise the forest fire hazard to extreme before long.

Sorry, I meant spring conditions. That far north, I just would have envisioned wetter conditions. The Sierras near me, are still getting snow. Even before the rain the last few days, it has been too wet for wildfire.

I hope they get things under control; I totally understand what happens with wildfires that size.
